The coronavirus pandemic got everyone by surprise and with it came anxiety, pressure, and fear. However, there are ways to tackle that. The easiest ways to do that are reading books and watching TV shows because you can be immersed easily and more effectively. But when it comes to that, we should choose lighter things to watch.  Because if we don’t, instead of feeling lighter, we’ll just get more anxious. For that reason, I will recommend five of my favorite TV shows to watch to get out of your boredom. All of them are available on Netflix.

1. Gilmore Girls

If you haven’t watched this TV show, then you should do that right now. This is one of all-time favorites. It follows the story of Rory and her mother, Lorelai Gilmore and their daily lives. Lorelai wants to put Rory in a private school in order for her to go to Harvard, but they don’t have money to pay for it. So, Lorelai turns to her demanding mother for money, which comes at a cost. The mother and daughter will have to attend Friday dinners at Rory’s grandma’s place. The show has 7 seasons and a special.

2. Chef’s Table

The elephant in the room – or rather this list – is a food-related show because I’m a foodie and seeing shows like this is very soothing to me. This is an original Netflix documentary series that was nominated for several awards, including an Emmy. Each episode shows different chefs in restaurants all over the world and it’s just so interesting to see. It shows innovative dishes and mouth-watering desserts. The show has 6 short seasons across four to six episodes that are 50 minutes long. It also has a French edition called Chef’s Table: France.

3. Crashing Landing on You

It wouldn’t be one of my lists if I didn’t include an Asian drama. This one in particular got me back into watching K-dramas as it’s different than the others.

This one is about a South Korean businesswoman who’s unlikable and spoiled. She ends up paragliding in very bad weather and loses consciousness in a place she’s never been. It turns out that she crash-landed on North Korean territory. An Army Captain finds her and threatens to kill her, but she pleads for her life. For that reason, they get themselves into trouble and he’s forced to hide her. It’s a story about adapting to a new culture and making the most out of it. It also touches on character building and valuing the little things in life. But let’s not forget about the romance! It is beautiful.

4. Grace and Frankie

This is a sitcom about friendship, forgiveness and old age. It’s heart-warming and hilarious that I showed it to my mom. Since then, it has become the show I watch with her. The story follows Grace and Frankie whose husbands call them to dinner to tell them something. They would never expect to hear what they said next. They both said they were leaving them because they are in love with each other. That pushes the women to share their San Diego beach house even though they hate each other. Little by little, they start developing a beautiful friendship and become business partners. This show is a quick and enjoyable watch.

5. Jane the Virgin

This show is super funny and telenovela-ish. If you don’t know what telenovelas are, they’re Latin soap operas. Their trademark is being overly dramatic, and this applies to this show too. The story follows Jane Villanueva, a Latina 23-year-old virgin who gets artificially inseminated – by accident. She later finds out that her donor is both her boss and former crush. You also follow her boyfriend, mother and grandma as well as her famous telenovela actor dad. So, the show centers around the family members’ relationships. It’s a very heart-warming and dramatic show. The series ended recently with 5 seasons.

None of these shows are new, but all of them are very enjoyable and light-hearted. I would also like to make some honorable mentions. Firstly, Fuller House and Modern Family. I love sitcoms and they’re the best way for me to get distracted for a while. Besides that, I also love watching The Great British Baking Show and Nailed It, which are both about baking. They’re just so entertaining to watch. With that being said, I hope you guys enjoy these TV shows as much as I do.
