If you’re like me during quarantine, scrolling through social media for a majority of the day is simply inevitable. As one of my favorites quotes goes, “Necessity is the mother of invention”, and with coronavirus news going around, I’ve seen people come up with creative videos from the comfort of their home. One of my newest favorite trends I found this month is the Dalgona Coffee trend, also known as the “whipped coffee”, and today I’ll be sharing its origin story as well as how to make it at home (because seriously; you have to try it!)

The creamy whipped coffee drink gets its name, “Dalgona” from a traditional sponge cake treat in South Korea. Since it went viral back in January, the internet has blown up with tutorials on how to make it on TikTok or with aesthetic pictures of it over on Instagram.

Additionally, when I first heard about the drink, I wasn’t too quick to jump on the bandwagon for it because I liked how I make my regular coffees at home, and I didn’t know how difficult it would be to make it. However, as I came to learn with the drink, it’s actually rather simple to make, and there’s only four ingredients to it; instant coffee, sugar, milk, and boiling water.

First, you start off by mixing together what I call the “2-2-2 Ratio”: 2 tablespoons of boiling water, 2 tablespoons of instant coffee, and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Next, you whip those together until they become a creamy mixture (light brown, if you need a visual cue like me), and once your arm is tired, you can grab your favorite mug, cup, glass, whichever you like! Then, add some ice, add your favorite milk, and spoon the whipped coffee mixture on top and voila! Your drink is ready for a quick snap and a sip!

For my own personal drink, I like to add caramel on top as I do have a sweet tooth, and you can add any of your favorite toppings on it! I’ve seen some drinks will add cinnamon on top. The more extravagant ones will put chocolate drizzle in the cup before the milk, which I’ve heard makes it taste like a milkshake. However, if trying different kinds of coffee, hopefully, this will inspire you to try something new this spring season.
