Reform the Norm- Meet SGA Candidates Noah Hutchison & Bakhtawar Yasir

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNT chapter.

There is still two days left to vote for UNT’s SGA next President and Vice President team, and Noah Hutchison & Bakhtawar Yasir  are looking for your support as UNT reaches an end to the election. This past week, I had the opportunity to speak to their administration and discuss what they bring to the table to better serve UNT’s student body. Here is everything you need to know about their campaign!

Why do ya’ll want to run for SGA President and Vice President?

We wanted to run for SGA President and VP in order to be the change we want to see while doing whatever we can to better serve the students of UNT. We are not running for the title or the position but to have more opportunities to give UNT students the change they deserve to see on their campus and ensure their voices are heard.

How will you build upon what the current President and Vice President have started?

If we were to win, we will build upon what the current President and VP have started by ensuring all of the changes they have made and are currently in process are carried out to our candidacy. For example, we can ensure that the list of demands to help ensure UNT is as diverse as its population is followed up with next year.

What are you hoping to change if y’all are elected?

There is a lot that we are hoping to change and it falls under our main platforms of housing, parking/transportation, mental health/student safety, SGA restructure, equity/campus climate, accessibility, and institutional affordability.

How can UNT improve on Diversity and Inclusion on campus?

There are many things UNT can do to improve Diversity and Inclusion on campus such as ensuring the Inclusion Demands from this semester are fulfilled, expanding the number of support groups at the CTS (Counseling and Testing Center), and expand the diversity trainers since as of right now the ratio is 2 trainers for 42,000 students.

Why did y’all choose “Reform the Norm” as a campaign Slogan?

Our campaign chose the campaign slogan ‘Reform the Norm’ because we believe our platform emphasizes the over-needed change to the status quo.

What sets you two apart from the competition?

What sets us apart from the competition is that we have both been active student leaders on campus, however we have a different history of experience. Noah has been SGA Communication Director this past school year and Bakhtawar has been involved in number organizations while serving executive positions as well. When both avenues come to work together, we are better able to serve others with our broad understanding and knowledge about tht UNT campus. UNT is a diverse campus with all different types of people and the more we know about the campus we are at, the better we are able to serve the people in it.

If you would like to learn more about their campaign and the initiatives that they plan on bringing to campus, you can follow them on Instagram or Twitter @ReformTheNorm20. You can also visit their website here to learn more about their platform.
