Maura’s Monthly Book Review: Get a Life, Chloe Brown

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

This book, written by Talia Hibbert, was just a joy to read. I was on the verge of a reading slump and this was exactly what I needed to pick myself up.

After a near-death experience, Chloe Brown decides that she needs to make some changes in her life. In order to do this, she devises a “Get a Life” list—full of items that will help her live her life to the fullest. She enlists the help of the handsome superintendent of her building, Red, to assist her with this list and the story kicks off from there.

I cannot speak to the disability representation myself, however, this book felt very authentic in its representation. Chloe’s illness does not define her, but it is a large facet of her life, which felt incredibly realistic. I loved the way Red handled Chloe and her illness. He respected her without coddling or infantilizing her, which made him so swoon-worthy.

As an introvert that would often rather sit at home and read instead of going out, I found Chloe very relatable. Feeling the need to create a “Get a Life” list is very much something I can relate to, which made me connect with Chloe on a very deep level.

As for the romance, Chloe and Red have a hilarious banter. There were times that I was actually laughing out loud while listening to this audiobook. They both brought some baggage from previous relationships to the situation, but it was handled in such a beautiful way. Chloe and Red had some pretty good communication as well, which I always enjoy.

I will definitely be checking out more of Talia Hibbert’s books. Easy 5 out of 5 stars and a new favorite.
