With the advent of COVID-19 and the increase in social distancing, it can be hard to keep yourself sane. Sometimes you just need an escape from the uncertainty, the tweets and the news about the virus. I’ve been stuck in my house for a while, and I’m already starting to get antsy.
But one way you can beat this is by reading books.
But where do you start? What if you’re not an avid reader? That’s okay because I’ve got a few recommendations. These books are some of my favorites and I hope they become your favorites too.
- The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Frank L. Baum

This story is so timeless, which is why it’s one of my favorites. The land of Oz is weird and interesting to read about. If you love fantasy this is a great choice. Also, this book is easily accessible and sometimes free because it’s old.
- Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll

If you’ve seen the 1950’s Disney movie, this is way more weird than that. What I love about this book is that it’s light-hearted. It’s wacky and totally absurd which I personally love in my books. There are talking door knobs, an invisible cat and singing flowers. Like Oz, this book is old enough that you can probably find a free version ebook or audiobook.
- The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee

This is a more recent book that I couldn’t put down. If you like “Gossip Girl” or any teen drama about rich people, this will be a very entertaining book for you. This also has a cool dystopia theme since it takes place in the future and all of New York City lives in a high rise building. I read this all in one day, which doesn’t happen often. Also, it’s part of a series so you can read the second and third books. too.
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling

The entire “Harry Potter” series is good to read but this one has a charm to it that makes it my favorite. I like how we learn more about Harry’s parents in this, and we get introduced to some great characters, like Lupin and Sirius. There are also elements of time travel in this book that I love.
- Paper Towns by John Green

This is another one of those rare books that I read in a day. If you love mystery and coming-of-age tales this is a great book to read. The characters in this book are unique, funny and extremely relatable. And there’s a road trip, which makes it that much better.
