Netflix has over 300 shows, but we mostly just watch the same shows over and over, right? How many times have you watched Friends this year? I think I’ve already re-watched the whole thing just in 2020. Some shows on the streaming platform get a lot of hype, such as Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) or Stranger Things and even Friends itself, but there are a bunch of A-M-A-Z-I-N-G shows that you can stream on Netflix that are somewhat hidden gems. And they can also be a very good distraction during this time at home, while we’re quarantined. So, here are 7 great underrated TV shows for you to watch on Netflix!

One Day at a Time

One Day at a Time is a 2017 Netflix original show about a Cuban-American family that deals with day-to-day problems in a hilarious way. Justina Machado plays Penelope, a single mother who is an Army veteran dealing with PTSD, and her mom, Lydia, is portrayed by no other than the amazing Rita Moreno. It also manages to tackle many important issues such as mental illness, immigration, sexism, homophobia and racism. The show is a reboot of the old CBS sitcom from the 1980s and it was developed by Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce. It was cancelled by Netflix after its third season, but Pop TV picked it up and it’s now releasing new episodes weekly.

Atypical

Atypical tells the coming-of-age story of Sam Gardner, played by Keir Gilchrist. He is a 18-year-old boy who has autism spectrum disorder. The show is about his life with his family and friends at school and his teenager problems, such as dating and getting good grades. The show has received positive reviews for its portrayal of autism and other issues.

Award-winning actress Jennifer Jason Leigh plays Sam’s mom, Elsa and young actress Brigette Lundy-Paine plays his sister, Casey. It was created by Robia Rashid for Netflix and it premiered on 2017. The fourth and final season will be released in 2021.

Dead to Me

Dead to Me is an American comedy created by Liz Feldman. It’s about two grieving women, played by Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, who bond during therapy. The two of them build a powerful — and funny — friendship over their losses. The show had very positive reviews and even received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, for Christina Applegate.

Its first season is from 2019 and the second one is coming on May 8, 2020.

The 100

The 100 is a sci-fi teen drama developed by Jason Rothenberg based loosely on the novel series of the same name by Kass Morgan. In the show, Planet Earth was destroyed by a nuclear war and only the people on space stations survived. These stations got together and after decades they decide to send 100 juvenile prisoners to see if the Earth is habitable again. The teen group is lead by Clarke Griffin and Bellamy Blake, played by Eliza Taylor and Bob Morley, respectively.

In 2020, the seventh and final season will air on the CW, but the earlier seasons are already available on Netflix for you to watch.

On My Block

On My Block is a teen comedy that tells the story of four street-savvy friends navigating their way through high school, in a rough inner city neighborhood. The show was created by Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft.

Its diverse cast, story-lines and performances got good praise from the critics. Young actors Sierra Capri, Brett Gray and Jason Genao star in it.

The sitcom was first released in 2018 and its latest season, season 3, came out on Netflix in March 2020.

Sense8

Sense8 follows eight “sensates” — humans who have a physical, emotional and mental connection with one another around the world. Even with its sci-fi characteristics, the show still explores human connections and emotions and tackles important subjects that are rarely talked about in science fiction shows, such as politics, religion, sexuality and gender identity.

The show has amazing LGBTQP+ representation and it stars trans-actress Jamie Clayton along with other cis-actors, like Brian J. Smith and Tuppence Middleton.

It was developed by the Wachowski sisters, Lana and Lilly and it is a true cinematic masterpiece. After two seasons, the show was canceled by Netflix in 2018.

Anne with an E

Anne with an E is a 2017 canadian comedy-drama about Anne Shirley, a very opinionated young orphan who is sent to live with elderly siblings on Prince Edward Island in 1890.

The show was adapted from the 1908 novel Anne of Green Gables by Emmy-Award-winning writer Moira Walley-Beckett. It stars Amybeth McNulty as the young Anne and also Geraldine James and R.H Thomson. It has a lot of positive reviews and got 89% of average audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

It was canceled on 2019 after the release of its third season.

Now you have 7 new amazing shows for you to binge watch, while self-isolating. You can thank us later, enjoy!
