The tie-dye trend is shaping up to be the most unexpected yet viral trend of the season, with vibrant swirls of color almost guaranteed to be popping up amongst your Instagram style feed, who knew this seemingly 60’s trend would be making such a comeback?
Suddenly, we’re all spending a lot of time at home and seem to be on social media. When scrolling through the never-ending flush of self-obsessed Instagram live streams and your friends’ daily workout routine that ‘everyone’ has been asking about, you may have noticed the rise in a certain type of textile design.
Tie-Dye.
Tie-dye clothing first became popular in the West in the 60s and 70s alongside the rise of the hippie lifestyle. It became a symbol of the hippie aesthetic and the bright outlook on life and mood associated with it. In the 60s, where the world was filled with turbulent political standpoints and protests, the hippie lifestyle was a way of embracing freedom and hope. The clothing then had a resurgence in the ’90s when it regained popularity among teens. The 90s have been a key source of inspiration for several seasons in recent years and the pieces which have elements inspired by the era come with a certain amount of nostalgia
This is such a fun and energetic trend that anyone can wear and can be styled in so many ways. From tie-dye sweats and loungewear to high fashion slip dresses, the trend seems to have taken over 2020. It is also very easy to D-I-Y it, especially right now when lots of us seem to have all too much time on our hands.
Embracing creativity is so important now more than ever! I think it will be interesting to see how long this trend will hang around for and if the D-I-Y nature of it will have any influence on how the average consumer engages with do it yourself design!
