The Easiest Ways to Save Money Right Now

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

With all this extra time on our hands, we might as well be looking at ways to save a dollar here and there. Saving where you can will make a big difference in the long run. Who said you can’t have fun on a budget?

DIY Your Own Trendy Outfits

Skip out on the expensive tie-dye sets that are completely taking over social media, and make your own! Sweatpants and sweatshirts are under $20 at Walmart, and you can use bleach to tie-dye for a cool design. You’ll end up with a super trendy outfit that looks a lot more expensive than it actually was.

Take Advantage of Free Trials

Services like HBO and Audible allow you to do a trial run with a free period. Since we’re all looking for ways to stay entertained right now, it’s the perfect time to tap into these free resources. Virtually every online service, whether its streaming, music, books, food, or delivery, will offer some type of free trial.

Download Coupon Extensions

Online shopping is infinitely better with extensions like Honey. Honey finds coupon codes and automatically applies them at checkout. It saves you the trouble of trying discounts that don’t work, and sometimes it’ll give you money off that you didn’t even expect.

Use Library eBook Downloads

Like everyone stuck at home, I’m rekindling old hobbies. I have plenty of time to get to the picks on my reading list, but I didn’t want to pay for all of them. Most libraries have online sites where you can rent eBooks and audiobooks for your phone, iPad, or Kindle. This is a great way to save money while supporting local libraries.

Buy and Sell on Poshmark

I’ve been cleaning out my closet a ton lately and finding things that don’t fit me or I don’t like anymore. They’re perfect for selling online! Poshmark is awesome because you don’t have to pay a fee to list items. If they don’t sell, you don’t lose anything. The buyer even pays shipping. Buying used clothing on Poshmark supports sustainable fashion and creates less waste too!

Use Reward Programs

As much as we all love our takeout fixes, they can get expensive. Even buying a coffee everyday adds up. Companies like Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, and Chipotle have rewards systems that you can access through their app. They allow you to earn points for every purchase and earn your way towards free food and drinks! Some even give you birthday rewards!

Use these tips to make staying at home feel a little more like the life we all remember. Besides, things are always better when they’re free.
