Cardi B Allegedly Files for Divorce From Offset

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

After three years of marriage, Cardi B has filed for divorce from Offset. She filed the court documents in Georgia, and is seeking primary physical and legal custody of their daughter, Kulture, as well as child support from Offset. According to TMZ, the documents are clear that “there are no prospects for reconciliation.”

The two rappers secretly married in 2017. After being married for close to a year, the pair finally announced that they had been legally married in September of 2017, even though they had a very large, public engagement in October of 2017. The news eventually came out after Offset referred to Cardi as his “wife” during the BET Awards. The two then welcomed a daughter, Kulture, in 2018. A few months later, several cheating rumors started to surround the couple—specifically directed towards Offset. After Offset repeatedly apologized to Cardi, even going as far as crashing her Rolling Loud set to ask forgiveness, the two eventually reconciled. The two have continued to make music together and seemed to be going strong as far as the outside world was concerned.

According to another source that is close to the couple, Offset’s constant infidelity was what led to the divorce. When speaking to People, the source said, “Offset has pretty much cheated the entire time [they’ve been together], but Cardi looked the other way because of the baby. She also didn’t want to be embarrassed. But she’s had enough.” However, neither party has confirmed this.

In the divorce documents, Cardi makes it clear that they are currently separated from each other and that she wants Offset to be ordered to pay her legal fees. She also asks for “an equitable division of all marital assets,” which has led people to believe that there was not a prenup.

However, even though the court documents sound like there is a lot of conflict between the two, sources close to Cardi say otherwise. The sources told TMZ that Cardi had no idea that the lawyer planned to petition her case the way they did. They also say she plans to have the documents amended to reflect her wishes. The main change would be to remove Offset’s responsibility of child support. According to the current documents, Cardi is demanding Offset be responsible for child support. According to TMZ’s sources, however, Cardi doesn’t want any financial support as she is fully capable to support Kulture and herself.

The announcement comes a few days before what would have been the couple’s third wedding anniversary.
