While the US passport might not be worth much right now, I believe many can relate when I say I’m looking forward to the day that our borders are again open, post-COVID-19. After all these months, I must admit the travel bug is hitting, so here’s a list of the 8 cheapest countries to travel to while young and broke when we finally can again.
- Nicaragua – $35

Nicaragua is a country in Central America right above Costa Rica. With a price point of $35 a day and beautiful natural attractions like volcanoes, waterfalls, rivers, plenty of places to hike, and beautiful wildlife (including monkeys) it’s unbeatable! Most stores will also accept U.S. dollars so there’s no need to convert your money! TIPS FROM THE LOCALS: don’t drink the tap water and also don’t be afraid to bargain for prices, it’s normal there!
- Vietnam – $30

Vietnam is a country located in Asia that can be found south of Thailand. At an average cost of about $30 a day, a tourist can find fun in hiking, local customs, and exploring natural wonders. It’s recommended to pick up cash- street vendors (which it is highly recommended to check out) often don’t accept cards.
- Philippines – $35

The Philippines, located in Southeast Asia consists of about 7,641 islands in the western Pacific Ocean. With a budget of about $35 a day, the Philippines is a beautiful and easy destination. English is widely spoken and with tons of things to do, why not go enjoy your dream beach vacation? Although, make sure to do your research- you may want to skip out on visiting during the months November to March because that is their annual monsoon season and rain and tropical beaches don’t always go hand in hand.
- Bali – $27

At $27 a day, a trip to Bali is unbeatable! An island province located south of Indonesia in the Indian Ocean known for its beautiful beaches and clear water. This beach/ jungle getaway on the equator is exactly what you need in 2021. Try to visit between May and October as it is the county’s dry season. It is recommended to take a taxi if you’re not comfortable renting and driving motorbikes. Also be sure to check out destinations like Nusa Penida, local cooking classes, the Campuhan Ridge Walk, and so much more!
- India – $20

India, one of the world’s most populated countries, is the perfect place to visit if you want to view the world from a different perspective. The average cost of visiting is about $20 a day, which is UNBEATABLE! With a culture and sights to die for, broaden your world and visit! While there make sure to check out the beautiful architecture. Tips while there; don’t drink the tap water! India is kind of known for something called “Delhi belly” or an upset stomach. Try to avoid this by not eating produce washed in tap water, trusting your gut when deciding whether or not to buy food from vendors and even going vegetarian for your trip to avoid dodgy meat.
- South Africa – $40

South Africa is a country almost 2 times the size of Texas providing plenty of things to see. It’s actually called the “adventure capital of the world” if that gives you insight on some of the attractions available when visiting like: bungee jumping, hiking, swimming and more. I also would suggest checking out the apartide museum for any history buffs like myself as well as being sure to check out and see as much beautiful nature wildlife as possible. As when visiting any other country make sure to be aware of your surroundings, for theft is very common in the country, but if you are logical and responsible South Africa could be an incredibly beautiful and fun trip!
- Georgia – $30

Georgia (the country- not the state), located northeast of Turkey (the country not the animal), is a beautiful country that you can slide by on a budget of only $30 a day! When visiting Georgia, take in its natural scenery, they have everything from beautiful mountains, glaciers, meadows, to urban cities. While it may be harder to find English speakers while traveling, the easy to navigate public transportation, and easy going nature of the locals will allow you to still have a great trip! However, don’t forget cash when in Georgia- you’ll find a lot of places that still don’t accept cards!
- Romania – $33

Romania, a country often looked over when it comes to planning your ultimate European getaway, is a beautiful country that you can get away visiting with a budget of only $33 a day! Located south of Ukraine and Hungry, this often-forgotten wonder is the 9th largest country in Europe with a rich history (for all my fellow history buffs). Romania being the intersection of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Russian empires allows visitors a direct glimpse into the past. Don’t forget to take a look around or else you might miss some of the beautiful nature throughout the country!
While we wait on the day we can actually visit these places again, get excited and do your research! Traveling comes with so many benefits; finding yourself, seeing the world, meeting more people, educating yourself and more! It’s not unattainable to see the world without breaking your bank.
