What Being a Best Friend Means to Me

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

I always wanted a little sister. I love being an older sister to two brothers, but I always wanted a younger sister. I’m 21 years old now, and I am not expecting any more siblings; however, life works in very mysterious ways.

Once the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions started being lifted in New York, my job at home opened back up and I was working a decent amount of time, especially since there wasn’t much else to do. While working, I became very close to one of my coworkers—this coworker turned out to be the younger sister I always wanted.

Now, I have my childhood best friends who I consider family at this point, and I even have some friends here at school who I know will always be around. But, let me tell you, my friendship with Chelsea—the quiet, giggly girl from work—is so much more than just coworkers who decided to grab coffee together.

Chelsea and I started doing nearly everything together. We basically became best friends overnight. Truthfully, I could entertain you with countless stories of our adventures, but this article isn’t about that. This article is about what I’ve learned about being a good friend.

It isn’t every day that you gain a new lifelong friend. So when you do, you realize that certain aspects of that friendship are just different than normal encounters.

Take, for example, the constant ability to laugh at the blandest of comments while simultaneously turning them into the best thing you’ve heard all day. A ramble? Slightly. But, if you instantly thought of some mundane, inside joke that makes you chuckle, you know what I’m getting at.

Another example: the ability to send an “I’m bored…coffee?” text and get an immediate “I’ll be ready in 5!” response. But, the coffee run turns into a doughnut run, which turns into a Target run, which turns into a dinner date, which turns into a beach night.

There’s also that special ease of conversation. You can’t have a 30 minute conversation about a single TikTok with just anyone. You can definitely try, but you won’t succeed with the wrong person.

There’s something really special about a friendship where, despite a few years of age difference, you both mutually gain confidence, support, and life advice from each other.

Being able to call someone just to laugh about an encounter you had with a stranger and then hanging up and going on with your day…that’s the mark of a great friendship. I can’t even count the number of times something small has happened and the first person I text is Chelsea, just to laugh about it.

Like I said, it isn’t every day you come across a person you click with so well that you can’t even imagine life without them. So when you do, notice how that friendship differs from others.

My friendship with Chelsea has changed me in so many ways and all for the best. I hope you also find a best friend who is like a little sister to you in all the right ways.
