Buying the perfect wardrobe is everyone’s dream, but most people don’t have the funds for it. I know that I’m living off of my college budget and certainly cannot afford my dream wardrobe. However, there is a way to buy a great wardrobe for even greater prices. That’s right, thrift shopping! Thrifting is a great way to find unique and fashionable items without hurting your bank account. Here is a guide to a successful thrift trip.

Take Your Time

If you want to be a successful thrift shopper, then you must understand that it takes a while. Being thorough is especially important if you want to find good items. Thrift stores are packed full of different clothing items, and it takes a long time to look at all of them. If you plan on thrifting, make sure you set aside a couple hours. A rushed thrift trip is never successful!

Look at Every Section

Personally, I rarely find items in the women’s section. The items are usually too dated for my style. That is why I always make sure to look at the men’s section. The men’s section is a gold mine for awesome hoodies, sweaters, and graphic tees. Also, men’s items are usually oversized, which is super trendy! I never leave a thrift store without scanning every single section.

Remember Thrift Flips

I often find myself finding items that I think could be cuter if one thing was different about it. Then I remember I can flip it! Any clothing piece can be cropped, cut, embroidered, etc. The options are endless. This tip does require a bit of practice, but I promise it can be so much fun! It’s also a great way to pick up some new hobbies like sewing or embroidery. Who knows, maybe it’s your new passion!

Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover

Never turn your head to a thrift store or flea market because it doesn’t look like it has any good items. Sometimes the best items are hidden under a hundred bad items. You have to try! While a good item can never be promised, it’s never impossible! The worst that could happen is you walk away empty handed, and that’s okay!

It’s Okay to Leave with Nothing

I am definitely guilty of buying things because I felt like I couldn’t leave empty handed. However, I’ve learned from my mistakes. Leaving empty handed is totally okay. This just means that you’ll have to come back in a week or so and try again. Leaving with nothing also prevents useless clothing items from cluttering your closet. Believe me, I would know.

Thrift shopping can be intimidating if you’re new to it, but it doesn’t have to be! Use these tips next time you thrift, and you’ll feel like a professional.
