Let’s Talk Verzuz: My Top 5 Artist Battles (No Spoilers)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kennesaw chapter.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve been bored since Corona arrived. Sometimes it feels like social media is the only source of entertainment and interaction that I have left. So when Verzuz TV started having battles, I was all for it. I’m sure most of you have been watching the Verzuz battles between music artists on Instagram, or have at least heard of them. Well, I picked out a few between some of my favorite artists and ranked them based on expectation, quality, sportsmanship, and entertainment. I’m not a music expert and this is solely based on my opinion — but I think this is a pretty good list that I’ve created. And, maybe if you haven’t seen any of the battles yet, this will convince you to.

Fifth Place — Fabolous and Jadakiss

I really enjoyed this one! Honestly, it’s only fifth because the other battles were just so amazing that there was no other place to put this one. The DJ’s really did their thing and the music selection was great. However, Jadakiss did get a little tipsy — a little drunk — so it kind of felt lacking on his part. It was very entertaining though and I loved the chill vibes, as well as the camaraderie that I felt through the screen in this one.

Fourth Place and keeping the pace — Brandy and Monica

I wish that I could put this one in the first or second spot. It really was one of the best Verzuz battles and I’m so glad that they were able to get these beautiful women together to do it. A lot of times, we let the media and music industry pit female artists against each other just for the sake of doing it — and we feed into the drama they create. It was great to see these two queens enjoying themselves, serving looks, and admiring each other. I loved both of their music selections. It was a great experience and it was truly inspiring.

Third Place is still in the race — Alicia Keys and John Legend

I know, I know — How can Alicia Keys and John Legend be third?! Here me out, guys. I loved it! And I’m one of the first people to say that I’m a huge fan of both of these amazing artists and musicians. The music selection was so great for the time that we’re all in right now, and the entertainment was definitely there. Honestly, the only reason that this one isn’t second or first is because of my very high expectations for this battle. They met them — but I wanted them to blow my expectations out of the water. But again, this battle was immaculate and beautiful. If you haven’t already, please give it a watch. The beginning was amazing and it only got better.

First Runner Up — Erykah Badu and Jill Scott

No Spoilers, but the vibes in this one were immaculate. The mutual respect that both of these queens showed to each other is something that we can all learn from. The music selection was amazing and exactly what I needed. The entertainment was there, the quality was there, and it exceeded all of my expectations. This battle really set the bar high! I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you’re looking to hear some nice throwbacks that you can just vibe out to, you have to listen to this battle. I promise you won’t regret it!

My Winner — Fred Hammond and Kirk Franklin

This one, this “battle”, was exactly what I needed and more. It fed my soul, my spirit, and blessed my ears. The energy in it was off of the charts. It was so spiritual that I cried. It was so pleasing that I smiled. And, I felt better by the end of it. I think that with everything going on in the world right now, this session was more than needed or necessary. There are no words that can describe the way I felt about this one. Even if you aren’t religious or spiritual in any way, I urge that you listen to this. The message(s) that these two wonderful men communicated and the energy that was emitted from the screen needs to be felt and heard.

Honorable Mentions

My two honorable mentions are the battles between: 2 Chainz & Rick Ross, and Ludacris & Nelly. Unfortunately they did not make my short list. But, if I could have made the list longer, they would have been on it. I am a big fan of all four of these men and I thoroughly enjoyed their battles as well.

All of these battles were amazing. It was hard picking out such a select few and even harder trying to rank them. Hopefully I haven’t offended anyone with my choices.  Verzuz did an amazing job putting all of the artists together and creating an experience that we all would enjoy, so I really appreciate them for that. All of the battles are available to watch on YouTube and some of them are saved on the Verzuz TV Instagram page. Again, if you have not watched these battles, I highly recommend that you do. I guarentee that you will enjoy them!
