Fall is coming into full swing and there is no better way to get in the fall spirit than decorating for the new season! Whether you are in a dorm, apartment, or at home this semester, there are plenty of reasons to start decorating and so many different ways to make your space unique.

Decorating for the season can actually help improve your mood. Our brains react to different environments, changing the way we feel sometimes without us even noticing. Filling your space with new decor to match the season may help you feel refreshed and motivated. It is important to remember that not all decorating is just visual either. Candles, new soft pillows, and a Halloween song playing in the background can engage all different senses to truly immerse yourself in autumn. Visual cues can still be a huge mood boost though, especially lights. Try hanging some warm fairy lights, like yellow or orange ones to change the light in your space.

Hanging lights and putting out pumpkins can also be a relaxing break from the stress of this online semester. It’s easy to get stuck in front of your laptop at your desk all day, but getting up and moving around your living space can be helpful in reducing the stress and boredom that comes with online classes.

Decorating doesn’t have to break the bank either! There are so many DIY ideas all over the internet now, like these. You can also check out thrift stores or stores like TJ Maxx and Marshall’s for discounted decor items. If you’re looking for more unique additions to your home, try shopping on Etsy.

So now that you want to decorate, how do you begin? There are so many articles out there explaining how to color-coordinate or create a matching aesthetic which can be fun, but can also seem expensive and kind of stressful. My advice is to just decorate with items that make you happy. Not everything has to match perfectly in order to have a fun, festive space that you and your friends will love!

Some ideas to start off include getting the classic fall staple: pumpkins. An uncarved pumpkin can last eight to twelve weeks which is perfect for the whole season. Be careful if you carve it though, then you may only have it for a few days before it starts to rot. If you don’t want a whole pumpkin, there’s still plenty of ways to incorporate the classic fall fruit into your decor. Pumpkin scented candles, plastic/felt pumpkins, and this cute garland on Etsy are just a few ways to bring fall inside.

If you want to decorate more for Halloween, buying cobwebs and other inexpensive decorations are an easy way to give a more spooky vibe. Different color lights and signs like this skull one from Target can make your space scary yet still fun (I already have the skull hanging in my living room and I LOVE it). Add some tall candles, and you’ll be set for Halloween.

The most important thing to remember is to have fun bringing in the fall season. Once your space is all decorated, you’ll be ready to get in your favorite sweater and sip a pumpkin spice latte again.
