October 2020 is here! The midterm season has officially started, and Halloween is around the corner. The Presidential election is less than a month away. Oktoberfest usually takes place right about now. October celebrates World Mental Health Day. Amidst all the happenings of this busy month, check out these podcasts that deserve a listen this month:

Teenager Therapy

A podcast run by five sleep-deprived teenagers that discusses the issues a modern-day teenager faces. World Mental Health Day was on October 10 and celebrated for mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against social stigma that still exists. In honor of World Mental Health Day, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined Teenager Therapy. They spoke about prioritizing mental health, removing the stigma surrounding mental health, and contributing to a healthier world holistically.

Kamala: Next in Line

With the election less than a month away, this seems like an appropriate listen. This podcast dives into Kamala Harris’s humble roots, her journey into becoming the first African-American woman to represent California in the Senate, and now as the first African-American woman to be nominated for the Vice President for a major party. The podcast paints Kamala’s real character and the struggles Kamala has been through to be where she is right now.

Say Their Name

Your Instagram feed may not have Blackout Tuesday posts or viral videos, but the stories of those killed are still important as ever today. Say Their Name is a podcast that memorializes the stories of seven Black individuals that were killed or assaulted by police. With accounts dating from 1993 to today, this podcast provides you an intimate journey of these events through those involved and their family members’ eyes.

You’re Wrong About

Two journalists, Mike and Sarah, are obsessed with the past. In every episode, they dive into a person or event previously distorted in the public eye. Previous topics include Killer Clowns (perfect for this spooky season), Princess Diana, Marie Antoinette, Human Trafficking, and many more. For Gen Z teenagers like us, accepting narratives like this that deviate from the given ones should be more common.

The Receipts Podcast

Hosted by three honest, fun girls, The Receipts is an unfiltered podcast with real topics at the center. They created a safe space for women of color and discussed racism, interracial dating, and cultural appropriation. The podcast is truly a unique one simply because their episodes are brutally honest and genuine.

All of these podcasts have significant and relevant topics that are more important, considering current times. October might be a busy month, but it’s always good to take a breather. Pop on your headphones and check out one of these great podcasts.

Manika is a sophomore majoring in Media, Culture and Communication and minoring in the Business of Media at NYU. While her heart lies in the sand dunes of Dubai, she couldn’t be any happier to live in the city that never sleeps, New York City. Manika has the biggest sweet tooth that always welcomes desserts so if she’s not found chasing pretty pink sunset skies, she can be found digging into desserts! When she isn’t found doing either of these, she’s definitely snuggled up in bed rewatching Friends for the millionth time!
