I am a huge fan of podcasts. I will listen to them when I’m cleaning, painting, doing homework, driving, basically anytime I am not listening to music. My favorite type of podcast is true crime podcasts, especially ones that involve comedy. I know comedy and murder usually don’t go together, but some podcasters make it work, usually by making fun of people who do terrible things. I will be telling you about four podcasts that will encourage you to jump head-first into the Halloween season.

My Favorite Murder

My favorite murder is hosted by two comedians, Karen and Georgia, who each tell a
story of a murder, freak accident, or paranormal occurrence. Their commentary and banter
is so funny, I find myself laughing out loud at some points. Even though it is a comedy
podcast, they incorporate just the right amount of jokes while also being respectful to any
victims in the stories. They also read stories sent in by listeners which they call
“hometowns”. These hometown stories can be about almost anything but primarily focus
on connections with crimes, strange experiences, and paranormal activity. If you want a
less scary and intense podcast to listen to I would recommend checking out their
hometown podcasts, as they are less serious. Karen and Georgia are big advocates of
mental health awareness and encourage everyone to go to therapy in their podcast. They
also have a segment at the end of each episode where they read “fucking hoorays” from
listeners. This serves as a palate cleanser from all the horrible things they just talked
about where they read all of the amazing things going on in their listener’s lives. This
podcast is great for people interested in learning more about true crime but who also wants
a good laugh.

Unforgotten

Unforgotten explores the 2009 unsolved murder of Matthew Stewart, a family man who
was killed in his home next to his wife and young child. The murder takes place in
Mooresville, NC, which is my hometown and why I am so interested in the case. Freddie,
the podcast’s host, dives into the case by describing what happened, what evidence there
is, and the suspects. Freddie also interviews people who were close to Matt and his
family. As the podcast develops, the case seems to get progressively complicated.
Everyone has theories and all suspects are equally suspicious. This podcast is great for
anyone interested in investigative journalism. It gives you every public detail of the case
and some information that cannot be found anywhere else. I would also recommend this
to anyone who is a fan of mysteries. This case is still unsolved and a very interesting
aspect of this podcast is the fact that Freddie is threatened by anonymous sources to stop
investigating the case on his show.

Morbid: A True Crime Podcast

Morbid is hosted by autopsy technician Alaina and hairstylist Ash. It covers all things
true crime along with some episodes about paranormal experiences or creepy history.
This podcast is very detailed and episodes are typically fairly long. This is personally my
favorite podcast because it is the perfect combination of comedy, commentary, and
information load. I enjoy hearing more about the details and facts of true crime cases
along with the backgrounds of the people involved. This podcast is very informative
while also being entertaining. Morbid is the podcast for you if you like hearing about
every aspect of a crime, but also want to feel like you’re talking to your friends.

Radio Rental

Radio Rental is hosted by Rainn Wilson, also known as Dwight Shrute from The Office.
Wilson takes on the persona of Terry Carnation, an employee at a cassette tape rental
store. Although Terry Carnation is the host of the podcast, he is not the one telling the
stories. People are brought on the show to narrate their own experiences. Their stories
usually involve paranormal activity, close encounters with killers, or twilight-zone-like
experiences. The podcast is immersive, it uses sound effects and music to draw the
listener deeper into the story. I really enjoy this type of podcast because it gives me a
mental image of the story and makes me more engaged with the podcast. This podcast is
very spooky and perfect to listen to during the Halloween season. You would like this
podcast if you’re a fan of Dwight Shrute or if you enjoy a little scare.
