Comfy and COVID-19 Friendly: Halloween Costumes for a Night In

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Halloween doesn’t have to be canceled. With COVID-19 putting a damper on numerous events, Halloween fanatics are looking for ways to still celebrate at home while being socially conscious. Although Halloween may look much different this year, getting dressed up in a comfy costume for a scary movie night or to bake Halloween cookies is still a great way to celebrate.

Because of the pandemic and social distancing guidelines, many people will not be going out to party for Halloween like they are used to in order to abide by these guidelines to prevent getting sick or spreading sickness to others. At a typical costume party, an elaborate costume is much more customary, with fancy makeup, tight dresses and uncomfortable shoes. On a night in, however, the goal is to be as comfortable as possible while lounging around the house, but still being able to be dressed up in order to feel festive and get in a few cute pictures.

The following costume ideas are great for a comfortable and cheap but still cute night in this Halloween:

Grandma – For a grandma costume, you can wear a robe, a nightgown, and some slippers. Put dry shampoo in your hair to make it look grey and snuggle up on the couch. Try not to fall asleep!

Animal – The only thing required for this costume is a onesie! Pick your favorite animal and snuggle up in the fuzziness. To enhance the costume for the sake of pictures, some makeup could be used to add a nose and whiskers, if needed.

Superhero – A onesie could be used to turn into a superhero as well, or you could use an oversized t-shirt with their famous logo and a cape.

Scarecrow – To become a scarecrow, all you need is a flannel, a pair of jeans, shorts, or leggings, and makeup to exaggerate the look.

Hippie – This can be as comfortable as you would like. Throw on a pair of bellbottom jeans for a more structured look or a maxi skirt for lounging. Then, pair either bottom piece with a long-sleeve blouse and a flower crown. Bonus points for fun patterns, especially florals!

M&M – This costume idea requires a little bit of DIY work, but it is extremely simple. All you need is an oversized, solid-color T-shirt with the letter M cut out and attached to the shirt. If you would like to be more creative, you can do fun makeup to match the color of the shirt and a cutesy hairstyle.

These are great for last-minute get-togethers with a few friends, a night in with roommates or by yourself.

Whether the Halloween spirit is typically a part of your year or not, the unprecedented time that we are in due to the coronavirus pandemic currently lends itself to new experiences, even if they happen while you are in your pajamas at home. No matter what you decide to do, I hope you have a great, safe Halloween!
