This year I’m enrolled in a course called “Monsters and the Monstrous: Anxieties of an Empire”. Throughout the course, we focus on books that feature monsters and discuss British colonialism. Thanks to this book I get to read Dracula on Halloween. But, if Dracula isn’t your speed hear are some spooky classics that are perfect for Halloween.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Frankenstein is a classic monster novel that isn’t as spooky as it is thought-provoking. However, the monster element within the story makes this book a perfect Halloween read.

Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

This book gave me chills! If you are going to pick up any book on this list make sure it’s this one.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

This book is so creepy! And the plot twist is to die for.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

The Brontë sisters have my heart. And this book makes my heart skip a beat.

The Tell-Tale Heart (And pretty much anything from Poe)

Edgar Allen Poe is the King of Spooky. If you want a chilling read then look no further than Edgar Allen Poe.

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

A Feminist spooky read! The first time I read this short story I immediately started to read it all over again. I adore this story.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving

If you are like me (a literal baby) and can’t handle spooky stories this is perfect for you!
