Ranking My 10 Favorite Halloween Candies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cincinnati chapter.

For obvious reasons, Halloween in the year 2020 — just like everything else — won’t be the same. In the midst of a pandemic and a divisive and stressful presidential election (Tuesday, November 3rd! Get out and vote!) Everyone could use a little bit of normal . . . and that normal could certainly come in the form of celebrating and dressing up for Halloween. Whether it be by yourself or safely gathered and distanced with friends, the spooky season and the holiday can be a way to bring us all together in difficult times. So, in the spirit of the season, I’ve decided to rank my personal favorite Halloween candies.

Don your costume, grab some of your own favorite candy and see what you think about my Halloween Candy Rankings 2020!

10. Skittles

Allow me to preface: Skittles ended up further down on my list only because of an abundance of competition from other candies. However, if you’re looking for something fruity, Skittles are where it’s at. Different varieties allow for many different flavors, and they’re always a classic!

9. Almond Joy

This is potentially a controversial pick. If you don’t like coconut or almond, this candy would definitely be a no. But since I do love both of these things, Almond Joys are a hit with me! I think that the coconut-almond combo covered in chocolate is delicious.

8. Hershey’s

Okay, so I might be a little biased… namely because I’m from Hershey! When your streetlights are literally shaped like Hershey’s kisses, it’s a little difficult not to include a classic Hershey’s candy on the list. Though the classic Hershey bar might not be the most exciting, just like a pair of your favorite blue jeans, it’s a staple that never goes out of style.

7. Twix

Twix is also a solid, never-miss type of candy. Whether you’re team #LeftTwix or #RightTwix, either way you can agree that the chocolate and caramel plus a crunchy cookie on the inside is a wonderful candy combination.

6. Peanut M&Ms

Normal M&Ms are good, but add a peanut in there and they’re phenomenal. Peanut M&Ms are crunchy, chocolatey and delicious. They’re the perfect small candy that you start eating and, if you aren’t careful, you might never stop.

5. Snickers

As will become apparent as my rankings go on, I seem to have a preference for combinations and lots of different flavors in one. Snickers checks these boxes, including chocolate, caramel, peanuts and nougat. These are a candy worth trading for!

4. Kit Kat

Break me off a piece of that Kit Kat Bar! Please do, because Kit Kats are coming in at #4. I don’t know how something so simple can taste so good, but I don’t question the magic. Kit Kats are always wonderful and easily shareable — though you might not want to.

3. York Peppermint Patty

Mint and chocolate together is a superior flavor combination, so York Peppermint Patties are way up there on my personal list. Something about the flavors and the bright silver wrapper combining just creates an amazing treat. Yum!

2. Reese’s Cups

Do I need to even explain myself with this one? Chocolate. Peanut butter. It’s simply unmatched. Bonus points if it’s a pumpkin-shaped Reese’s!

1. Take 5

It has come to my attention that apparently, this isn’t a very well known candy. But Take 5 is my absolute favorite — peanut butter, peanuts, chocolate, pretzels, and caramel in one candy? *Chef’s kiss* It’s not as popular of a Halloween give-out, but I certainly wish it were.

Honorable mention: Candy Corn

I’m not even sure if this counts as a “Halloween candy,” so I chose not to include it on my official list. However, I couldn’t talk about Halloween without bringing up Candy Corn! Even though I know it’s just small pieces of pure sugar, I don’t love it any less. When else would eating straight sugar be condoned, if not Halloween?

No matter what your favorite candy is, remember to stay safe and have a fun Halloween season!
