How to Nail the Interview– Even During COVID

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Manhattan chapter.

Interviews are the best way to make yourself stand out as an exceptional candidate for a position. Rather than just being a name on a resume and cover letter, the interview is a way for you to show your best traits, personality and capabilities. While it’s unlikely that you will have an interview in person during the current circumstances brought on by COVID, a zoom interview still offers you the same opportunities. Some tips in order to maximize your chance of making an impression and nailing the job are…

Print out your resume and cover letter

Whether your interview is in person or over the phone, printing out your resume and cover letter is a useful thing to do. If in-person, print more than one copy in case your interviewer asks for one. If over the phone, having your resume and cover letter in front of you can better prepare you for the conversation, as well as making it easier to make references while answering questions.

Prepare for the typical interview questions

Prior to your interview, be sure to prepare with a roommate or friend for the typical questions that will be asked. Some of those questions include: Why are you interested in this position? What makes you a good fit? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Etc. Through the preparation of these questions, you are able to have answers ready to go and reduce your stress and avoid thinking off the top of your head.

Get rid of all distractions in your room

If your interview is over the phone, be sure to set yourself up in a space that will minimize distractions and interruptions. In order to perform to the best of your ability, it is important to have all your attention on the interview at hand.

Write down some important points and ideas you want to include

Although this may seem simple, by jotting down some ideas and keywords you want to incorporate into your interview, it is easier to remember and refer to during the process.

Interviews are scary and overwhelming, but through utilizing these simple tricks, you can make the process easier on yourself. Be confident in your abilities and you are sure to nail this interview!
