Superheros have long been the fascination of many young children and people today. Thousands crowd conventions and cosplay, devoting hours and money to learn more about their favorite heroes and buy merch. So, why are so many people obsessed with superheroes? Well, superheroes open up the possibilities of powers and worlds beyond our reality. It allows for one to give in to their imagination and the action sequences can be mesmerizing. It also perpetuates the notion that good always wins which can inspire hope in many, especially during bad times. As someone who has been obsessed with superheroes and comics, I am always on the lookout for new takes on the original caricature of superheroes, and The Boys is just that!

The Boys is a show based in a world where people are born with powers. These individuals are called supes and can join organizations to fight crime and protect the country. The most “powerful” of the sups are The Seven, a group curated by Vought International. We see that the Seven draw parallels to DC’s Justice League. However, we soon see that these heroes are more terrifying than beacons of goodwill. Selfish and self-absorbed; they ruin the lives of others while keeping up the facade of being shining examples of hope. The plot surrounds Hughie Campell and an incident where a member of The Seven, A-Train, kills his girlfriend while running at such an incredible speed that he rips her apart. Angered, he seeks to find revenge and finds a group of outcasts run by Billy Butcher who want to destroy The Seven, specifically their golden boy, Homelander.

So why should you watch The Boys? The Boys is a mix of that awesome superhero action mixed with morbid reality. The Boys speaks on corruption and how many people and power can use said power to commit and get away with horrid actions. We see what could be our reality if superheroes really existed in our world. Also, we get characters that are complex and complicated who navigate a morally grey world, where everyone has their own skeletons in the closet. Season two also is a must as it speaks on current events from hate speech and propaganda to corruption in politics and how there isn’t any perfectly clean politician. If you are into shows that mix fantasy with gritty reality, The Boys will definitely be a hit with you!
