Thrifting has become very popular recently. Young adults everywhere are making their way to their local second-hand stores in hopes of finding vintage pieces for their wardrobes.

However, there is so much more to love about thrifting. The experience can be long, but once you find exactly what you are looking for, it is exhilarating. Not to mention, thrifting allows us to shop sustainably without breaking the bank.

To make thrifting even better, it has become super accessible through apps like Depop. Especially now that we are staying home to prevent the spread of coronavirus, this is definitely an app you should check out.

As a slightly obsessed user, here are my tips to help you navigate and get the most out of Depop.

Personalize your app.

The app has an “Interests and Sizes” section of your profile. Use this! There are so many sellers and items on Depop, and it can be overwhelming to search something general. This helps narrow your search results down.

In your “interests” section, you can specify specific styles as well as brands you are looking for. Your “sizes” section will help make sure you are finding the perfect fit for you.

Have at least one specific piece in mind.

There is so much to go through on Depop, even after narrowing down your personal profile. You have your entire home screen — which has curated finds from Depop — as well as your following feed.

It is good to have one piece in mind to avoid feeling overwhelmed. For instance, my current goal is to find a maroon corduroy jacket.

Upon searching this, my best advice is to be very open to what you are seeing. The search results will often vary, but it can help you become inspired by other pieces. This also helps build your feed by finding profiles that typically sell your style of clothes.

Use your filters.

Again, there is so much on Depop. This means that there are probably lots of people selling the same items, which is why it is important to notice when someone might be overcharging.

Thankfully, Depop has filters that allow you to sort through colors, sizes, shipping and pricing. The probable case is when one seller charges $20 for something like a cloth face mask, and another sells the same one for $6.

Don’t be afraid to talk to sellers.

Everyone I have talked to on Depop over the past four months has been so exceptionally kind. Most people are truly attempting to sell their old clothes or their thrifting finds without raising the price ridiculously.

Most sellers want to work with you. If you want to ask for a lower price, just try. Many sellers have discount options as well as free shipping if you bundle multiple items. Most are trying to work for you — so be open and optimistic.

Take your time.

It can be hard to find exactly what you’re looking for, but with time, you will find it. It is vital to be patient since it is a lot of scrolling and keeping an eye on your favorite sellers’ pages. However, it is very fun though and takes skill in my opinion.

It is all especially worth it when you finally receive your package along with the tiny little goodies most sellers place in their orders.
