you locked me in a cage and expected me to spread my wings

but they weren’t strong enough

i was beaten and battered

you sat there and watched as i struggled and ripped at my own flesh

dreaming i were a more beautiful species

you made a spectacle out of me

i was merely there for your entertainment

a prisoner in my own body

and you expected me to stay content

unbeknownst to you

i would leave this toxic coop and my feathers would bloom into something more beautiful than

        you could ever dream of

i would become full of life and color

full of happiness and strength

so full of such beauty that your simple mind cannot comprehend

and i would fly once again
