Predicting Spring Fashion Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

March 20th is synonymously known as the first day in Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. However, for us Floridians, we experience the seasons as varying levels of hotness with the occasional four weeks of rain sprinkled throughout the year. Nevertheless, the “chilly” weather we’ve endured has lessened, and Spring is around the corner. That means we can finally hang up those turtlenecks layered with chunky sweatshirts and bobble hats in the closet in exchange for more bearable wear for the Florida heat. That also means we have a new cycle of fashion trends that we can fit into our wardrobe. This season I think TikTok and Pinterest are going to spearhead what becomes trendy and popular. Of course, there are no rules to fashion. Fashion is all about what gives you confidence and makes you feel your best! Here are a few of my predictions of Spring fashion trends.

Coordinating Masks to Outfits

Fashion can be extravagant, creative, and safe. We are still in a pandemic, and for me, it is sometimes rough getting up and putting on an outfit together when the majority of my time is spent at home wearing sweatpants. But, coordinating masks to outfits is a great way to be excited about fashion again. There are several ways to match masks to an outfit. You can create an entire monochromatic outfit from head to toe. You can use different colored masks to throw a splash of color. You can mix prints and patterns, like different sized gingham patterns or geometric patterns.

Handmade Crocheted Garments

No Sesso
During quarantine, many people have been looking for creative ways to keep themselves occupied, one being how to crochet. The do-it-yourself experience of making your crochet garment is rewarding, and I think more and more people will attempt to do it. Even if you are not a crochet professional, because so many are attracted to the idea, I would not be surprised if clothing companies begin filling their stores with crocheted items. There are also small businesses on Etsy, Depop, and other online marketplaces that make pieces for sale. There are multiple patterns online to get started and online communities like Ravelry where you can talk to others for advice and tips.

Platform Flip Flops

What if we replaced the chancletas with platform flip flops? I don’t think my mom would be on board but I could make the switch. A sandal with platform soles would pair great with a slip dress and a 90’s updo hairstyle for a night look or paired with denim shorts and a hat for a day at the beach. As the temperature fluctuates as the season changes, a platform flip flop will keep you comfortable at all times.

Cut-Outs

Cut-outs in sweaters. Cut-outs in tops. Cut-outs in dresses. Cut-outs in skirts. I think we’re going to see more cut-outs in garments this Spring. The cut-out spaces will especially keep you cool in the heat. Unlike holes in clothes that sometimes look randomly place, cut-outs are used to accentuate shoulders, the neck, and the waist. The Cut-out details can give an outfit a little bit of edge and are not seen as distressful as holes.

Cropped Cardigan

Urban Outfitters
Trade-in your Taylor Swift Folklore cardigan for a cropped cardigan. Cropped cardigans come in all different styles and patterns. My favorites are the pastel cardigans that are embroidered with springtime patterns like flowers. Cropped cardigans can go over a plain tank top and elevate an outfit. They can also be worn as regular tops. Cropped cardigans can go with dresses, skirts, shorts, and any kind of pants. They can also keep you both warm and cool.
