I always get asked something along the lines of “How are you always so happy?’ “How are you always so bubbly and positive?” “Are you ever even sad?”

Well, of course I get sad, and so does everyone else. Sadness is a normal and valid human emotion. If someone doesn’t experience sadness then how would they experience happiness?

Although I have my lows, I strive to make the best out of everything. So here’s some personal things I keep in mind to help me keep smiling.

Nothing Is That Serious

I tend to be dramatic and overreact sometimes, but once I started adapting to more rational reactions, I came to realize that not everything is so serious. So what you fell in public? Get up and laugh it off, that’s all of 5 seconds in your day, do not let it over power all 24-hours. You have to remember not everyone is thinking what you think they are thinking. This means that you might think “omg what a loser” but that doesn’t mean that everyone else thinks the same thing. They might not even think about you for the rest of the day! How egoistic is it to think that someone will spend their whole day thinking about your 5-sec fall? We think of our own mistakes more often, so breathe and let it go.

Control the Controllable

This one took me a long time to learn. You see, as a type A person, I have to control every.little.thing. But sadly, that’s not how it works, because not everything is in my control. And it’s not in your control either. Therefore, worry less. You can control your actions, your emotions and your reactions. Keep this in mind when something doesn’t go the way you wish it did. Do everything in your power, but know that there are limits to your power. Do not set expectations for how someone will react to (insert event, conversation, ect), because you do not know that.

Let Go

Holding on to things and people can be exhausting. If it’s meant to be, it’ll be. And yes, sometimes you should put some efforts into saving a friendship or a situation. But not everything is worth your energy. Holding grudges will not harm anyone, but yourself. It is wasted energy that could be used elsewhere; to work on yourself perhaps. When someone walks out from your life, you are allowed to be sad, and to miss them. But don’t let it keep you from meeting new people.

Possibilities are Endless

Everyday you wake up is a blessing. The sooner you start appreciating every moment of everyday, the better satisfied with life you’ll be. Live everyday with the knowledge that nothing is promised. If something doesn’t go your way, just shake it off and try another path.

After all, we are all humans trying to figure this thing out. Deep breaths, you’re doing your best, and I’m so proud of you!
