Five Women Chefs to Support this Month & Forever

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Conn Coll chapter.

Each week, I will contribute an article to my food column: College Cooking, where I will share recipes and opinions on food trends and culture. To see more of what I like to cook and bake, check out my personal food Instagram at @healthy_eclair

In honor of International Women’s month, I have compiled five women chefs whose Instagram accounts and cookbooks I personally love, and hope you will, too. If you are thinking of expanding your cooking and baking skills, their recipes are a great way to start.

Samin Nosrat

Samin Nosrat @ciaosamin is the author of Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat which was turned into a four-part Netflix docuseries. She was a food columnist for NYMag until February of this year. Nosrat also hosts the Home Cooking podcast with Hrishikesh Hirway. Her recipes are classic goodies that soothe the soul and delight the senses.

Sophia Roe

Sophia @sophia_roe is a chef, writer, and activist who combines her passion for food with food justice, sustainability, and advocacy in the industry and beyond. She is currently writing her first book which will be released at the end of this year. Until then, I recommend following her on Instagram where she posts mouth-watering recipes from mushroom pasta to pumpkin bread. Her Instagram lives cover topics ranging from wellness to politics.

Shalane Flanagan and Elyse Kopecky

Best friends Shalane @shalaneflanagan and Elyse @elysekopecky are authors of the New York Times bestselling cookbook Run Fast. Eat Slow. Shalane is an Olympic silver medalist and is the fastest American woman to run the Boston Marathon. She met Elyse, a chef and nutrition coach, on the cross-country team at the University of North Carolina. Both women combine their backgrounds in athletic training and nutrient-dense diets to share their recipes online and via their cookbook. I have made count recipes from the book and can only rave about their chicken, white kidney bean, and veggie soup.

 Samah Dada

I have only just followed Samah @dadaeats but I have already archived so many of her recipes to make when I am back home. Host of #Cooking on the Today Show and author of Dada Eats Love to Cook It, Samah shares plant-based recipes from butternut squash and lentil curry to drool-worthy chocolate chip pancakes. Her Instagram reels are always informative and get me excited about cooking, whether I am in my dorm room or back in my kitchen at home.

Carlotta Perego

Carlotta @cucinabottanica is the author of Cucina Botanica where she shares vegetarian and vegan recipes. Although her account and cookbook are in Italian (a fun way to keep up with your language skills if you are an Italian major or minor), her Instagram reels are easy to follow. Not to mention, Google Translate can come in clutch when you are in a stitch. I personally cannot wait to make her radicchio and walnut pasta as my Italian roommate abroad often cooked with radicchio.

Who are your favorite women food columnists, bloggers, and chefs?

Elizabeth Berry

Conn Coll '21

Elizabeth Berry is an English and Italian Studies double major at Connecticut College with a passion for journalism. She enjoys overnight oats, traveling to new cities, and reading the night away.
