Dressing Your Best for Cold Weather Dining

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Amidst the pandemic, just about everyone is looking for some normalcy in their weekend routines. Going out to dinner is a number one choice for those looking for a night out. Being able to stay warm yet fashionable can be a struggle, especially as the night goes on, and you wish you had brought that big, furry coat you decided to keep at home. Thankfully, there are many great ways to stay cozy as you enjoy food and drinks, while looking cute at the same time.

My experience thus far has been good and bad when it comes to dining outside in the cold weather, especially when restaurants only offer outdoor seating. A few tricks I have learned from my recent dining experiences are simple. For starters, more likely than not as the night goes on, you are going to get cold in a cute, cropped long sleeve shirt with a pair of jeans. My solution to this is an oversized sweater or jean jacket. Many of my friends have gone out in leather jackets to complete their look for the night, but end up freezing cold waiting for the Uber ride home. Jean jackets and oversized sweaters keep you warmer and can be more comfortable. When it comes time for the weather to get really cold, and you still aren’t willing to break out your winter parka, looking into stylish jackets with sherpa or fur on the inside is a good alternative.

Another go-to for me has been layers, lots and lots of layers. If you’re wearing a shirt that can fit a tank underneath, always go for that option. Any sort of layer is going to keep you warmer than just the top you have on. It is also important to think ahead when you’re getting dressed. If you want to wear that new oversized band tee you just bought, put a long sleeve on underneath.

When it comes to pants, jeans are most likely everyone’s go-to. However, if you can squeeze a pair of leggings underneath loose fitting jeans, I would go for it (assuming the weather is pretty cold). If you aren’t planning on wearing jeans out, corduroy pants are also a great option for the colder months. I have a couple pairs that are life savers when going out to eat, because they are soft and keep you feeling warm throughout the night. However, if you’re opting to wear sweatpants, you are pretty much covered when it comes to feeling warm.

Accessories can keep you warm too. Silk scarves that are usually worn in your hair are actually great tied around your neck to keep you more covered up, while still being fashionable. If you aren’t willing to wear a huge scarf while you’re out to eat, this is a suitable option. Fuzzy socks can also come in handy (I wear them all the time) especially out to dinner. If you are still willing to wear open-toed shoes during the fall weather, I commend you.

As the weather continues to change, our need for dinner plans remains the same. However, with our current situation, we need to assess our options for fashionable outfits that still keep us warm. Use some of these tips, and you’ll never be too chilly to order your next drink again!
