Welcome to HC Lasell member’s day in our lives! We are all going to be taking readers through what a day in our life looks like as busy college students. Our writer, Alexis, is going to take you through what it is like being a full-time journalism student heavily involved on campus.

As a Journalism major and Fashion Media and Marketing minor, my daily routine includes lots of writing and being on social media. I run the Lasell Honors Program Instagram page and am on the Social Media Teams for POLISHED Magazine (a student-run magazine at Lasell University) and Her Campus Lasell. Along with writing for Her Campus, I also write for the POLISHED Magazine Blog and am an editor for POLISHED Magazine. This doesn’t include attending my daily classes, so let’s jump right into a day in the life of a Journalism major!

9am: I wake up and get ready for the day with breakfast and coffee at the dining hall. Then, I head to my first in-person class of the day, Writing for the Media.

11am: My first class is in the library, and we discuss last week’s assignment of interviewing someone we know and writing a feature story on them. I wrote about the retirement of a local figure in my town at home, who had worked as a nurse at the local hospital for 32 years. She found a way to work her way up through the company while balancing a strong relationship with her family. It ended up being an interesting article to write, and I really enjoyed it! We also do a writing exercise in class where we have to look at a photo and write a story about it. Next week we’ll be talking about social media posts, and I’m excited about that!

12:15pm: After Writing for the Media gets out, I walk to a different building for my 12:30 class, Fundamentals of Visual Art. Here, we spend our class time looking at student drawings from the previous assignment, which was to use shading in a drawing of a small object. I drew a mug and it was interesting to see other student’s work. After this, we discuss next week’s assignment, to draw a hand showing expression.

1:45pm: After my art class, I head to a different academic building, grab a quick snack in the student marketplace, and sit down for my 2pm online class entitled Media, Ethics, and Society. In this class, we discuss ethics in photojournalism. For example, we talk about the photos of people falling out of the buildings during 9/11. We discuss whether it is okay for journalists to publish these photos, or if it disrespects the privacy of the families of the victims. It’s an interesting topic, and it always gets me thinking. After this heavy and important discussion, we choose groups and topics for our final projects and my group decides to cover the ethics of photojournalism.

4pm: My Media, Ethics, and Society class has finished, so now it’s time to get some homework done. I have a discussion post due for my Social Media Management class, and after finishing that I spend some time creating a social media post for the Honors Program Instagram page about an idea for an honors component. When I finish with my work, it’s time for dinner!

5:30pm: I get a burger and a salad from the dining hall and then head back to my dorm building to eat with my friends. We talk and hang out for a while, updating each other about our days as we eat.

9pm: My friends leave and I spend some time editing an article for POLISHED Magazine before bed. After doing a little bit more work, I watch an episode of the Netflix show, “Georgia and Ginny,” before going to sleep around midnight.

I hope you enjoyed learning about what a day in life is like when you’re a Journalism major! Let me know in the comments below what a day in the life of your major is like.
