On Sunday, March 14, 2021, singer Taylor Swift won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. She was first awarded Album of the Year for her album Fearless in 2009. In 2015, she won the prize for the second time for her pop album, 1989.
Swift took home the award again this year for her album Folklore, which set a Guinness World Record for her. She has now made history as the first and youngest woman ever to receive the award three times, and she is tied with Paul Simon, Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder for the most Album of the Year wins ever!
On July 24, 2020, Swift released her album Folklore amidst the COVID-19 pandemic as a surprise album. It ended up becoming the best-selling album of 2020. On top of that, she gained five other Grammy nominations. Swift was nominated in other categories for Song of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media.
Although Swifties were surely betting that Swift would win more than just the Album of the Year at the 2021 Grammy Awards, the win for Folklore is extra sweet after the release of her Netflix documentary Miss Americana. In the film, she is shown reacting to the release of Grammy nominations in 2018. She finds out that she was not nominated for any of the big categories of Album, Record or Song of the Year for her album Reputation. After the Reputation tour was a hit, and especially since she had just returned from a three-year hiatus, Swift said she just has to “make a better record.” Swift was only nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album that year, and she, unfortunately, did not take home the award. After the release of Folklore and its sister album Evermore, Swift and her fans were ecstatic that she is getting the credit and recognition she deserves.
In total, Swift has been nominated for over 40 Grammy awards and has brought home a total of 11, a record-breaking number for the Recording Academy. Evermore, which Swift released on December 11, 2020, also has a high chance of being nominated for awards at the 2022 Grammys. There is no doubt that Swift isn’t finished with music yet, and Swifties can’t wait to see what she has in store!
