Sisters are the greatest gift, even more so if you have my sister.
The bond that my sister and I share is very strong. She is with me through everything and I reciprocate in the same way. Â
I can tell her anything, from the fun stories that happen at college to my deepest thoughts. I can talk about the people in my life, and she will trust and side with me every time.
When I become friends with people, my sister is included in that deal. She is always laughing and talking with my friends when they are over. I can call her at college, and my roommates will eventually come into the conversation. If you know me, you know her.
I am three years older than my sister and there are some bonuses to that. As kids, I bossed her around (probably too much). The games we played always went how I wanted them to go and I always got the one boy Barbie we had. Aside from that, I get to be there for her in similar times of life because I experienced it. I can give her advice to hopefully help her through difficult times. I can also see her wearing my clothes when they get passed down to her, because those things never bothered me.
The best part of it all is that I got to keep holding onto my childhood for as long as I could. She was still playing with American Girl dolls when I started growing out of them, and I joined her. She was still playing the pretend games of “school” and “home,” and I still acted as a teacher with my students. She still brought magic to life during the Holidays, and I got to live through it again. Even now, we are still playing video games together that are made for kids (there better not be any Roblox haters reading this).
However, there is a downside to being the oldest. She entered high school when I entered college. Therefore, I miss out on most of her high school experiences. She was able to come to all my dance recitals, field hockey games, and craft shows. I can only see her play soccer if a game happens to fall during my midterm break and for softball, I only get the end of her season. I don’t hear everyday stories about her in the cosmetology program like how she heard stories about my art classes. Her prom is coming up, and I am unsure I will be able to help her get ready and see her all dressed up, but she was there for me.
Achievements are celebrated through the phone. Stories are told on call. Birthdays are wished through messages.
But I know this is just the time of life we are currently in. Our relationship, our sisterhood still remains resilient. It is a rewarding experience to have a sister. I loved making our memories together: swinging on the swing set, playing with the mermaid Barbie bath toys we had, watching Disney princess movies, creating our own games that no one else would understand, making slime, faking being a YouTuber, filming Musical.ly’s, cartwheeling in the front yard, biking up and down the street, coloring, traveling to all the wonderful places we go, and her preparing my closet for move-in.
I am excited for the more memories to come. I love being able to laugh, smile, cry, and walk through life with her.
I wouldn’t want any other sister by my side.
Happy 17th Birthday Paige. You are getting so old, but I can’t wait to see all the amazing things you accomplish. I love you!
