For me, this spring semester seems like an eternity, a never-ending space of time. Maybe it’s because Purdue students don’t get a spring break this year or it’s just me, but it seems like a year until final’s week. Due to the longevity of the semester, I’ve really struggled with staying motivated, either towards my classes or working out. After using these on myself, here are my tips and tricks in becoming and staying motivated.

Choose goals that are realistic.

Making tiny goals to check-off is a sure way to increase your motivation. For example, every morning, before my classes, I write all the things I need to accomplish that specific day. When I finish a task or an assignment, I check it off and feel super accomplished.

Think of the end result.

Although it may be hard to get out of bed, a workout is never something I regret. When I want to sleep for another hour, I just force myself to stand up and move my body. After five minutes into my chosen workout, I feel 10x better. Just get up and move!

Use a reward system.

If I’m struggling, I often reward myself for completing a task. If I write a page on my paper or finish ten pgs. of a tedious reading, I will give myself five minutes on Instagram. You can choose whatever you want to motivate you in getting your stuff done.

Find an accountability partner.

Find a friend to keep you accountable. Whatever you’re struggling with, find someone who will periodically check on you and keep you motivated. For example, find a workout buddy! Make a goal: workout 4x a week. Not only will you get fitter, but you’ll build relationships.

Change your mindset.

Whether it’s working out or writing a boring paper, form a positive mindset. Trust me, it’s hard. When I’m tired during a workout, I tell myself  “Some people would love to go on run but they’re not physically able.” Or if I’m writing a paper, I say “I’m so lucky to be getting a college education because some students can’t.”

Switch up your routine.

You’re not going to be motivated if you have the same routine every single day! Change things up! Go to a new coffee shop to study or do a different workout, it will break up your boring routine.

I really hope you try to incorporate these tips and tricks into your life to increase your motivation. Good luck!
