Designing a room can be intimidating. In college, you have to work with what you are given. If you live away from home in a dorm or apartment, your space is likely temporary. If you are looking to make non-permanent housing your own, these are some tips I would recommend.
Lighting
Most rooms have a large overhead light. Usually glaring and harsh, incorporating different forms of light is key. Adding fairy lights, candles or lamps to any space will help tremendously. More creative forms may include a projector or fake fireplace. Sticking to warmer-toned lighting will give a cozier feel and can improve relaxation.Â
Pictures
Having a collection of framed artwork or photos of family and friends makes a space more tailored and personalized. With artwork, you can be selective about what pieces you want. The best part about photos is their impermanence. You can update your photos over time, or change them out. Arranging photos in the form of a gallery is a great way to fill space or dress up bare walls.Â
Storage
Busy schedules tend to induce messier rooms. With little time, it is easy to let items pile up. Having targeted storage spaces can help with this. It doesn’t have to be a bulky container. Instead, look into collapsible options. For instance, many ottomans have storage beneath. This is a nice piece that also allows you to store other items. If you are given a bulky dresser in college, consider using it as a nightstand and personalizing it.Â
The overarching goal is to customize a space to your personal liking. Be creative, and have fun. Incorporate these ideas if you choose, but add unique elements that make it your own, too. Use inspiration, or come up with something entirely new! Now is the best time to experiment.
