“currently Gleeking out!”

On Oct. 21, Disney+ and Hulu recently announced that they are bringing back the iconic musical series, “Glee” for a reboot. One of the producers and creators of “Glee,” Ryan Murphy has been teasing this reboot for a while, and he said that the show deserves to be “revisited.” Murphy has shared that he has finished the potential reboot. He also said that he has reached out to around 10 of the original cast members. Lea Michele (Rachel Berry) is fully set to return, while Heather Morris (Brittany S. Pierce) and Chord Overstreet (Sam Evans) are supposedly in talks with production. Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester) and Chris Colfer (Kurt Hummel) have both expressed willingness to return as well. There have been no announcements on what this new reboot will be about or when it will be released, but it is safe to say that all Gleeks around the world are excited about this new reboot.

“You’re A GEEK”

In 2009, Fox aired “Glee,” forever changing the concept of a show choir. “Glee,” created by producers Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan, centers on a high school glee club (show choir) called “New Directions” and the lives of those involved in the club. Characters include the director of the glee club, William Schuester, a raging cheer coach, Sue Sylester, an overconfident star student, Rachel Berry, a star football player, Finn Hudson, and many more. As part of the glee club, all those involved in the club are bullied relentlessly and face difficult challenges such as teen pregnancy, the death of friends, and school violence. The show aired until 2015 and has upheld its reputation as a nerdy cult classic.

DON’T STOP BELIEVING

Glee isn’t just known as an extremely funny show but also as a show that had a strong representation of culture and LGBTQ+ characters. When show choirs were often considered reserved for the “weird” kids, “Glee” created a new narrative for them. The show’s characters came from diverse backgrounds and united to perform.

Even though “Glee” was a groundbreaking show, they weren’t immune to tragedy. In 2013, one of the cast members who played Finn Hudson, Cory Monteith, died unexpectedly. His death left not only the cast of “Glee” heartbroken but “Glee” fans all over the world. In 2018, the actor of Noah “Puck” Puckerman passed away suddenly. In 2020, another key cast member who played Santana Lopez, Naya Rivera, died unexpectedly as well. This left many lovers of “Glee” wondering how the new reboot will replace the magic of the original cast of “Glee.”

DOES the comedy of glee outshine its problems?

“Glee” was groundbreaking in helping bring equal representation to TV, but some of the writing in “Glee” can also be considered problematic. Some episodes include lack of boundaries between teachers and students, Sue Sylesters’s verbal and physical cruelty, offensive stereotypes, and questionable statements.

Though most people are very excited for this new reboot, many wonder how the show will change considering that most of the scenes from the original show can be considered problematic. Although “Glee” has some rather controversial moments, many argue that the show wouldn’t be the same without its unexpected and problematic scenes.

a “new direction”

Although nothing can ever beat the original magic of “Glee,” this new adaptation may pleasantly surprise viewers. Many fans have taken to social media to guess what the new show will entail. The fact that “Glee” can be fully rebooted 11 years after its last episode shows how important it is to people worldwide, whether they watched it when it first aired or are just now seeing it. I truly hope that this new reboot of “Glee” will keep the same magic as the original show while also bringing some new aspects to the classic.
