Halloween Costumes That Aren’t Overdone Just Yet

Halloween is almost here, and if you’re anything like me, you’ve probably spent way too much time scrolling through Pinterest and TikTok looking for the perfect costume. With Halloween on a Saturday this year, I feel like I have to go all out, especially since finding time to see all my friends has become so difficult lately with our conflicting schedules. While there’s nothing wrong with classic princesses, Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders or Victoria’s Secret Angel costumes, I think we can all agree that seeing the same costumes every year gets a little repetitive. Whether you’re dressing up with your best friends, boyfriend, girlfriend, or going solo this year, here are eight cute costume ideas that haven’t been overdone by the time I write this.

  1. Michael Jackson

I am going as Zara Larsson because my friends have convinced me that I resemble her.  Michael Jackson, though, was also a top contender.. This costume strikes the perfect balance between iconic and chic. You can easily put on a black mini skirt or shorts, a white button-up, black blazer, and knee-high boots. Add the signature fedora and a single white glove, and you are good to go. It’s easy to recreate with pieces you probably already own, and you’ll definitely have an excuse to show off your moonwalk. Plus, who doesn’t want to listen to Thriller while getting ready for all the Halloweekend festivities?

  1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

If you’re looking for an easy last-minute group costume that isn’t completely overdone, the Ninja Turtles might be your answer. Get three of your best friends, pick your favourite turtle, and coordinate your outfits around their signature colours. If I were doing this costume, I’d probably choose a green mini skirt or shorts, matching tops, colourful bandanas, and some cute accessories.

  1. Strawberry Shortcake and Friends

As a 2000s girly, I couldn’t make this list without including the Strawberry Shortcake girls. Between Strawberry Shortcake, Blueberry Muffin, Orange Blossom, Lemon Meringue, and Raspberry Torte, there are so many adorable characters to choose from. Think colourful mini dresses or corsets, matching tights, bows, and lots of accessories. This is a wholesome, fun costume to do with your girls, and you are guaranteed to get some cute photos together, too.

  1. Paddington Bear

Although  this costume has become more common recently, it never gets old for me. It was also a top contender for me since I’ll be going to England on exchange this winter.  For this adorable bear, you’ll only need a blue mini dress or skirt, a red bucket hat, and little brown boots. You could even carry a tiny suitcase to complete the look. It’s simple, adorable, and calls for pieces you may already have in your closet.

  1. Bed Bugs

If you’re looking for a comfy costume that is easy to do on your own or with friends, this one’s for you. All you really need is a mini dress, sleep mask, and some antennas to tie it all together. You could even coordinate different colours with your friends for an easy, low-maintenance group costume on a night out.

  1. Curious George

Another childhood classic that deserves a moment this Halloween is Curious George. A brown mini dress or matching set, monkey ears, and a little tail make for a cute and easy costume. Better yet, convince your bestie or partner to dress up as the Man with the Yellow Hat. It’s the perfect duo costume, and I love that it’s recognizable without being something you see at every Halloween party.

  1. Peacock and Flamingo

If you and your best friend want a duo costume that’s a little more niche, a peacock and flamingo may be for you. I’ve seen this costume before, and I love how creative it is, with all the different fabrics, makeup looks, and jewellery. This is another picture-worthy costume, so if you’re a makeup pro, this one’s for you!

  1. Detective

With the rise in popularity of true crime shows and podcasts, a detective costume could be a fun option. It’s also effortlessly chic. Think a fitted trench coat, mini skirt, knee-high boots, and a cute little detective hat. Add a magnifying glass or a pair of sunglasses, and you’re ready to solve some crimes. It’s mysterious, fashionable, and leaves plenty of room for creativity. As a bonus, you can throw it together in 20 minutes or less if you really like to leave things to the very last minute.

Halloween is one of the few times a year when you can dress up as anything you’d like, so why not have a little fun with it? While I can’t promise these costumes won’t be everywhere next year, they are a little less popular and won’t break the bank. Whether you’re looking for something cute, nostalgic, or a little out of the ordinary, there’s something here for everyone. Hopefully, these ideas sparked some inspiration and will encourage you to enjoy the Halloween festivities, stay safe and vigilant, and make time for friends and family during this busy exam season!
