Communication Is Key…But How Do You Do It Right?

Communication is key… but how do you do it effectively?

“Communication is the key to any successful relationship”. Now, I do agree with this statement. Communication is one of the most important things in any happy friendship, relationship, business, etc. We have been told this over, and over, and over again since we were little. It is easier said than done. If you are anything like me, then when it comes to good, clear communication, it can be a difficult thing to do. Below I have some tips on improving your communication skills. I promise this will help strengthen any relationship you have.

1. Do not act on emotions.

Sometimes things happen or are said that upset you right away. And instead of giving yourself time to process emotions, you lash out in a state of anger or sadness. You might say something you do not mean or you might blow the entire thing out of proportion into a bigger issue. Sound familiar? It’s okay. Most of us have been there. Emotional control might just be the most important part of good communication skills. Also, the hardest to do. Give yourself time to feel any emotion and process before talking about what happened. This will eliminate arguments and help get straight to the point and fix the issue.

2. Think before you speak.

Although this is something we have been taught since grade school, it is still one of the most important aspects to effective communication. Be specific and clear when trying to communicate a problem. Have what you want to say ready before the conversation starts. Even write down notes so you do not forget anything when the time comes.

3. Listen, listen, listen.

Give your significant other, a friend, a colleague, or whoever you are talking to time to voice their opinion, concerns, or feelings. Have it be an open conversation. Really take into consideration how they respond to you. Conversations are a two way street. Make sure their voice is being heard just as much as you are.

4. Say what you want. Be clear.

To have effective communication skills you need to clearly state what you want and why. Do not expect anyone to read your mind. I suggest coming up with a plan on what you want to change and how you both will work towards that.

Communicating can be hard, uncomfortable, and awkward, but always make sure your voice is being heard. If something is bothering you, be open about it.
