I’ve lived in Boston for over a year now, and I’m a self-proclaimed shopaholic who loves thrifting. I buy so much from thrift stores that people have stopped asking me where I get my clothes from because they know I probably thrifted them. Here is a list of my tried-and-true spots in three categories: best pay by the pound, most convenient, and my overall favorite.

Best Pay By The Pound

First, my favorite pay-by-the-pound is the Goodwill on Harrison Ave. It’s located around the back of the Goodwill, but clear signage guides you there. Now, this hidden gem is not for the faint of heart. There are a lot of bins, so make sure you clear your afternoon and bring gloves or hand sanitizer. If you’re prepared to dig, I promise you’ll find some amazing things. You’ll never run out of things to look through since they switch the bins every hour, and they have an amazing selection of finds. Plus, when you get tired of digging through bins, there is a normal Goodwill in the front with more amazing pieces.

Most Convenient

Having a good thrift store nearby is always important, especially for busy college students who constantly need clothes for another party theme. I usually go to Buffalo Exchange when I’m on a time crunch.

And yes — I know this is technically a consignment store — but they usually have a great sales section and will almost always have a cute piece you are looking for. My friend bought both her formal and date-party dress from there for under $20.

My Overall Favorite

Lastly, my overall favorite thrift store in the Boston area is The Garment District. It is amazing. I always find something cute there. The first time I went, I found a Calvin Klein trench coat in their pay-by-the-pound section, and it fit like a glove. Every time since, I’ve found a piece I’ve worn several times.

I think it’s such a fun place to go, and since there are two sections — the one downstairs being pay-by-the-pound and the upstairs being a normal thrift store. It’s easy to spend hours there and find literally almost any piece you are looking for. It is definitely my go-to spot when people say they want to go thrifting with me. It’s also close to Central Square, so you can find some more stuff that way too!

The CW

There are so many other thrift stores in Boston, some honorable mentions being the Davis Square Goodwill, Groovy Thrifty, and Savers in West Roxbury. So if you are ever in the mood to thrift, there are plenty of places in the greater Boston area.

Some might be a bit of a hike, but it’s always a fun day!
