As Halloween approaches, scary stories and horrifying tall tales are retold again and again. Youngstown is no exception, but what are some of the most famous local folklore stories that plague children’s dreams? From the ghosts haunting Lanterman’s Mill to haunted trails, Youngstown holds plenty of spooky folklore.
Lanternman’s Mill
This local historic site is rumored to be home to numerous hauntings and a rich history. Located within Mill Creek Metroparks, this hidden gem hosts all kinds of seasonal events including Christmas at the Mill, Nature Walks, and Festive Finds. Originally, the mill belonged to John Young, the founder of Youngstown, in the 18th century. After being passed through a few different owners’ hands, it fell into disrepair until purchased by the park in 1892. Over the years the building served as a ballroom, a bathhouse, and even a nature museum. Yet, this historical space seems to be home to more than one ghostly apparition, a worker in period clothing that continues his work in the basement, a woman who gazes out of the windows, and shadowy trails have all been reported. I would highly recommend taking this local tour through the Mill, not only for the history, but for the ghosts!

Mill Creek Park’s Haunted Gorge Trails
When fall hits, one of my favorite activities is to hike. Something about the cool weather draws me to the trails! However, in this local folklore tale, these Mill Creek Trails seem to hold something more than beautiful fall colors and scenic paths. The Gorge Trails are rumored to be home to various paranormal activities. Humanoid shapes moving through the trees, floating orbs of light without any reflection, and chilling drops in temperature have all been noted. The park’s dark past of drownings and accidental deaths only fuels the ghostly rumors. Although they may not offer paranormal tours, a self guided walk through these haunted trails would be a great October activity if you’re looking for a local fright!

The Haunting of Oak Hill Cemetery
The history of Oak Hill Cemetery dates back to the 1850s. Originally, it was formed by a group of local Youngstown residents. It is known for its rolling hills and beautiful landscaping. The grounds are full of historical graves, including some of the earliest settlers in the area. Some of the stones even date back to 1811 as grave sites were moved to Oak Hill after its creation. From massive monuments and mausoleums to humble gravestones, generations of people are buried here. Not only is this cemetery home to historical settlers and workers, it seems to have a darker side. Reported sightings of military marching band music, shadow figures watching visitors and ducking out of view, and a dark presence following visitors have all been reported. If you would like to visit the cemetery, remember to be respectful of the history and gravesites.
