An Inside Look

As the school year is starting to pick up, so is class work, club logistics, and even life. Due to my major in education, my endorsement in ELL, and my minor in sociology, my days start as early as six a.m. My routine starts first with getting ready for the day, the typical: doing my makeup, hair, and getting dressed. Next, attending three classes on some days with little to no breaks; on others, only one, then I head into work after. Now, some may say taking a workload of 18 credits, managing a club, as well as being part of our lovely chapter is a lot to maintain; however, to me it is a privilege. I say “work” because it is literally that, however, it doesn’t feel anything close to work to me. Working with children has not always been something I gravitated towards at first; I wanted to pursue law; however, becoming a teacher has saved my life.

Ever since my junior year in high school, I have found my purpose in educating children. I found myself being a mentor for students, volunteering to introduce them to academic opportunities on campus, and I aspired to make that my career. Now, as a sophomore in university and in my second year of working with children, these past two years have been filled with grace, learning, love, and laughter. I first started as a volunteer at my now work-study job, working with children as small as infants to as old as grade school children. At first, I was afraid of ing the hindsight of being an authority figure and role model to the children and losing the spark in having fun. However, the children have always taught me I have the potential to be both. I remember that over this summer, I had to take a small step back because of the long commute to Seattle from Kent, and it took a toll on me emotionally. However, little did I know that once school started, they were waiting for me, except now they are all grown up.

The inside look can be scary, challenging, and even seem impossible. However, take it from my experience that the inside look can just be a small stepping stone to many more beautiful opportunities yet to flourish. And now, as a senator of the School of education, I am honored to say that I have been rightfully preparing to serve my community at SPU of upcoming teachers.
