Behind the Scenes of HC @CNU’s October Event

Zoe Hawkins Student Contributor, Christopher Newport University
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CNU chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

Based on the title, many of you probably assume I will be talking about some kind of Halloween themed event. WRONG! At Christopher Newport University, October is when many organizations raise money for breast cancer awareness. Her Campus started our Breast Cancer Awareness event last year. We partnered with an organization called Here for the Girls and painted rocks to go to survivors of breast cancer. This year we are on a mission to spread the same kind of hope and knowledge to the people of Christopher Newport University.

Planning for this event goes all the way back to the beginning of the year. Our amazing events director Mia Henty and outstanding marketing director Millie Dickey worked hand in hand to make this event possible.

“I was focused a lot on marketing the event to the whole campus and Social Media Team really helped with this by making flyers for Her Campus to post. I also worked with Millie a lot to set up tabling to fundraise for our event which helped spread the word to the campus at large. I did a lot of research into previous events and breast cancer. I wanted this event to represent breast cancer awareness and people struggling with breast cancer. I put a lot of time into making sure this event would run smoothly and to utilize our entire team,” Mia Henty, head of Events at HC CNU.

“I put together our fundraiser to raise money for our event. I got our members to sell candy and goodies to the students. I also arranged for our raffle and trivia prizes by going to many businesses around CNU that I thought students would like! Overall, I think the event is going to go very well and I think we’re going to be getting the word out about not only breast cancer awareness, but Her Campus as a group!” Millie Dickey, head of Marketing at HC CNU.

They have both worked tirelessly to make this event happen. Together they are quite the unstoppable team.

Something new that HC CNU put together this year for fundraising has been our Boobie Bundles! Yes, that is their name! In these Boobie Bundles are pink candies, a perfume sample, a button made by one of the working hands at HC, a bracelet, and a fact about breast cancer tying the whole bag together. We sold these while tabling in the David Student Union.

As someone who doesn’t have as much to do with events and marketing, tabling is one area where I feel I can help out the most. I have the ability to meet people and share the message of awareness with them. Many people forget that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so it feels really important to me when I get to remind people. I also get to meet more of my fellow members outside of meeting times. Sometimes a tabling day is slow and you just get to spend more time with the people who care about the same things as you. It sometimes brings us closer together.

On our first day selling Boobie Bundles, we had already made more than what we had spent making them. And by our second day, we sold out before tabling ended. It was beautiful to see how many people truly cared about this cause. People would come up to our table unprompted and ask about what we were doing.

Our Breast Cancer Awareness Event is this Tuesday on October 20th. It will be in MCM 101 starting at 7:30PM! We welcome anyone who is interested in spreading the hope with us. Please come by and join us!
