West Virginia University’s “Coal Rush” is a relatively new tradition that started back in 2024 as a tribute to the rich coal mining history of West Virginia. On a normal WVU game day, fans fill the stadium in a wave of blue and gold, but on Coal Rush games the dress code changes dramatically. To commemorate and celebrate the Coal miners of West Virginia, fans are encouraged to show up to the games in all black, a stark contrast to the norm.

Another fan favorite feature of the Coal Rush games is the black and silver jerseys worn by the football team. The uniforms were originally designed to recognize the work ethic and bravery associated with coal miners. WVU also now sells matching Coal Rush gear, featuring the now iconic “Built on Bravery” branding.

The celebration doesn’t just stop at the theme of the game; during halftime, the mine rescue team, as well as Coal miners and their families, are invited to participate in the celebration. At this year’s football game, they were recognized on the field and wore their work uniforms to represent their profession. Receiving and outstanding round of applause and waves of support from the Mountaineers in the stands.

This year marks the third year of Coal Rush at WVU,  and fans continue to show their love and support for this new tradition by showing up in unique black and silver gear. On October 10th, 2026, our Mountaineers faced off against Arizona in the third-ever Coal Rush game. Fans were a little disappointed as the game was held at noon, with many stating that a night game would’ve better fit the Coal Rush vibe. The game was high in spirit but unfortunately for us mountaineers, Arizona came out on top with a final score of 52-31.

Fans have started to really love and look forward to the Coal Rush festivities, and not only in football! Sports such as the men’s and women’s soccer teams, both basketball teams and the volleyball team have all begun to participate in this tradition, hosting their own Coal Rush games, respectively. WVU has always made a point to celebrate and commemorate the rich coal mining history of the state of West Virginia, and these Coal Rush games and celebrations are a perfect example of that.
