One of my favorite things about bedazzling is that there’s no right or wrong way to do it. You can go all out with colorful gems, stick to a simple pattern, or add a few rhinestones to something that feels a little too plain. It’s also an easy way to personalize everyday items without spending money on new accessories. Instead of buying something new just because it doesn’t match your aesthetic, you can give it a little makeover yourself.
I’ve found bedazzling to be the perfect craft to do while watching TV, listening to music, or de-stressing. I started small by bedazzling my charging cube and made my way up to my Tangle Teezer hairbrush, which is now covered in bedazzled stars.Â
If you’re looking to start bedazzling and don’t know where to start, here’s what I would recommend.
I would buy akit from Amazon that comes with gems, glue, and tools to pick up the gems. There are a variety of sizes and color options, but I started with a 36-color pack that included everything else for $6.99.Â
Then, I’d look on Pinterest for inspiration on what matches your vibe or for ideas on what you could bedazzle. For example, I was inspired to bedazzle my SD card adapter with a cheetah print style after seeing a cheetah print charging block, and I also got inspiration to bedazzle my hair mask lid.Â
Something that makes this craft feel so personalized is that I get to spend time thinking about how to make my products my own. By adding small designs to each step of my hair and makeup routine, I’ve found myself loving my products more. I’ve also received many compliments on how well their designs match my vibe.
Some of my favorite bedazzling projects have been my Rhode pocket blush, which is now covered in pink and blue flowers, my Rhode pocket bronzer, which now has a bedazzled bikini, and the lids of my Summer Fridays lip balm with their corresponding color.Â
For makeup and hair products, my best recommendation would be to bedazzle the lid, so that when you run out of the product and are ready to repurchase it, you can reuse the bedazzled lid. With my Dove Intense Repair Hair Mask, I spent almost two hours bedazzling the entire lid, yet I’ve gotten to salvage it through three different restocks.Â
I love that I can hold on to the designs I’ve spent time creating instead of starting from scratch every time I run out of a product.
If you’re a beginner, I’d recommend starting with a smaller project before committing to something that takes hours. It can be tempting to cover an entire object in gems right away, but even a simple pattern can make a product feel completely different. I also recommend planning your design before gluing anything down, especially if you’re working with a specific pattern or multiple colors.
A small but cute project could be bedazzling designs on claw clips. For my first claw clip, I started by just bedazzling the first letter of my name, then outlined the rims of the claw clip in a different color.
Once I felt like I had my technique down, IÂ attempted to bedazzle an evil eye onto a white claw clip, which has now become my most used claw clip. While it only took me 30 minutes, it helped elevate my claw clip, which now dresses up any basic outfit.Â
Although my projects have started small, I’ve found that they keep me creative and give me something fun to do.Â
Between classes, assignments, and constantly being on my phone, bedazzling has become an easy way to take a break and do something outside of my normal routine. I love that I can turn everyday products into something that feels uniquely mine without spending a lot of money. Whether you want to personalize your favorite makeup products or find a new hobby to try, all you really need is a few gems and something you want to make your own.
Bedazzling is something people can learn to enjoy for the peace it can bring. By taking time away from your phone and investing time in yourself to glam up something in your life and personalize it to your liking.Â
