How To Romanticise Your Sunday Reset – Time to Phase Out Bed Rotting!

There are two types of students on a Sunday, those who somewhat have things together; clean sheets, meals prepped, uni work done. Then there’s those of us who have been horizontal since we woke up at 11am, doomscrolling TikTok and reels, convincing ourselves that getting up for a glass of water is being productive. As someone who is guilty of the occasional bed rot, I can confirm that the Sunday reset is a game changer! Let’s talk about how to achieve a successful day.

Get out of bed!

First things first, get out of bed! I know it is easier said than done when it’s a freezing and rainy Glasgow morning, however, let’s create a morning that’s worth getting out of bed for. Open your curtains, pop on your favourite playlist and make yourself your favourite coffee or matcha. Remember, you don’t need a fancy west end coffee from an expensive café to have an “aesthetic” day, your favourite mug is perfect.

Reset your space

Let’s be honest, student accommodation isn’t exactly the stuff of interior design dreams. Between the laundry mountain, the questionable collection of mugs on your desk and the makeup scattered across every available surface, your room can quickly become a reflection of your mental state. Dedicate 15 minutes to putting everything back where it belongs, changing your bed sheets and tackling that pile of washing you’ve been avoiding, you might even rediscover a cute outfit for the week!  Once you’re done, why not get outside? Wrap up warm and take a little walk around Kelvingrove Park or the Botanic’s, I love putting on my favourite playlist or podcast and having a wee wander. A bit of fresh air and a break from your screen is the perfect way to reset your mind.

Getting things together

Nothing says Sunday scaries quite like realising you have a 9:00 AM lecture tomorrow morning, 3 deadlines and no clean clothes. Spend a little time checking your university timetable and save yourself the fright, note down upcoming deadlines and plan when you’re going to get work done, this will save you so much worry throughout the week. You don’t need a fancy planner, a piece of paper stuck somewhere visible will do. Sunday is also the perfect day to restock your fridge! Head to your favourite local supermarket and plan out some meals for the week, save yourself from those overpriced meal deals and odd fridge combinations.

Time to relax

Now for the best part, the everything shower! Get your favourite tunes on, use all your favourite products, and take your time. Think hair masks, body scrubs, fresh skin and your comfiest matching pyjamas. Light a candle if your accommodation allows it (my favourite is anything Christmas scented!) and settle down with a book, a comfort film, or your current obsession on Netflix in your freshly made bed. This is your reminder that self-care doesn’t have to involve buying a whole new collection of products. Sometimes it’s just washing your hair and putting on clean PJ’s!

Rest without guilt

It’s important to note, we’re not trying to phase out bed rotting entirely. Sometimes after a week full of learning, socialising and pretending to understand everything happening in a lecture, doing absolutely nothing is exactly what you need. We need to find a balance between resting because you need it and scrolling for six hours and facing the guilt of wasting a day. Give yourself a chance to relax without feeling guilty knowing you have done a few tasks to make tomorrow easier.

Ultimately, your Sunday reset doesn’t have to look like a perfect TikTok influencer routine. It’s about making the “boring” parts of student life feel a little more special and taking some stress away from the next week. So put the phone down, pop the kettle on and give yourself a little love. As Vincent van Gogh once said, “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together”.

Your Sunday reset Checklist:

  • Open the curtains and make your favourite drink.
  • Change your bedsheets and tidy up your room.
  • Go outside for a little walk.
  • Check that timetable!
  • Think of some yummy meals and get your food shop.
  • Pack your bag for Monday.
  • Have an everything shower and get your PJs on.
  • Do something you enjoy to relax!

As someone writing this on a very rainy and cold day, in my cozy, tidy room, with my favourite candle lit, I am extremely thankful for my Sunday self.
