SPF for your daily Skincare Routine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Skincare is an integral part of every hygiene routine that keeps your skin healthy and radiant. One thing you might not know about is the importance of SPF in your daily skincare routine.

First things first, what is SPF used for?

SPF (short for sun protection factor) is used to block or lessen the negative effects of the sun’s UV rays, which can damage your skin and cause fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and hyperpigmentation.

How does it work?

Once sunscreen is applied and absorbed, it prevents UVA and UVB rays from penetrating the skin by absorbing, reflecting, or scattering the rays. One thing to keep in mind is that no sunscreen is 100% effective when skin is over-exposed to sunlight — so make sure to reapply often and lessen your time in the sun!

When should you apply SPF to your face?

EVERYDAY! The sun can affect your skin even on days when it isn’t shining because it emits two types of rays: UVA and UVB. UVB rays have shorter waves and cause sunburns, which makes their effect more quickly noticeable. The issue is with UVA rays. These rays are longer-waved and can penetrate deeper parts of the skin, such as the dermis. UVA rays are always penetrating the skin, even when the sun is not shining. Both types of rays can penetrate windows, so if it’s sunny outside —even if you’re not out there — make sure to keep wearing that sunscreen.

Which sunscreen should you wear?

Now, this is different for everyone. It depends on your skin type (oily, dry, combination, or sensitive). I recommend doing some research on quality brands that sell a sunscreen that suits your specific needs. I personally use the Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 47 everyday. I love that it is a Clean at Sephora product, which means that it does not contain any sulfates or parabens. There are plenty of products available at varying prices.

All in all, SPF is a crucial part of skincare — even on days when the sun doesn’t shine. Do your part to protect your skin by finding the SPF best suited for you!
