What If We Find Our Way Back?

There are some people you meet and immediately know they are going to mean something to you. Maybe you don’t know how long they will be in your life or what your relationship with them will eventually become, but something about them feels different. And sometimes, the hardest part isn’t losing them. It’s wondering if you were supposed to lose them at all. I think there is a certain kind of heartbreak that comes from believing someone was the right person, just at the wrong time.  Because what do you do when you don’t have a reason to stop caring? What do you do when the relationship didn’t end because you stopped loving each other, but because life simply wasn’t lining up the way you needed it to?

It would almost be easier if there were something terrible to remember. If there were a clear reason to never look back. But when the memories are mostly good and the person still holds a special place in your heart, letting go becomes much more complicated.  I know this feeling because, if I could be with someone again, it would be him. I don’t know what the future will look like, and I know I can’t control whether we ever find our way back to each other. But if I could have another chance with someone I’ve already loved, someone who already knows me and who I already have so many memories with, I would choose him.

That doesn’t mean I think everything between us was perfect. It wasn’t.

We both made mistakes. We both said and did things we probably wish we could take back. There were moments when we could have communicated better, listened more, or handled things differently. I have things I wish I had done differently, and I’m sure he does too. But I don’t think making mistakes means that what we had wasn’t real. If anything, losing someone can make you look at your own mistakes in a way you couldn’t while you were together. Being apart has given me time to think about the things I could have handled differently and the ways I have grown since then. I can’t change the past, but I can learn from it. And maybe that’s what “right person, wrong time” really means sometimes.

Maybe it isn’t about two people being perfect for each other. Maybe it’s about two imperfect people who cared about each other but weren’t quite ready to be the people the relationship needed them to be. We’re often told that once a relationship ends, the healthiest thing to do is completely let go. We are supposed to delete the pictures, stop checking their social media, stop thinking about what could have been, and eventually move on to someone new.

But what if moving on doesn’t require you to erase someone? What if you can accept that someone isn’t in your life right now without pretending they didn’t matter? You can know that something isn’t working and still wish it had. You can understand why someone had to leave and still wish they had stayed. That’s the part people don’t always talk about when they tell you to move on. Everyone makes it sound so simple. But feelings don’t work on a timeline. You can’t decide that you’re finished caring about someone just because the relationship ended.

I still think about what it would be like if he came back into my life. I wonder whether we would be different people by then. I wonder if the mistakes we made would feel different with time and distance. I wonder if we would understand each other better after everything we’ve been through. If our paths cross again, I don’t want us to simply go back to what we were. I’d want us to create something better. I’d want us to bring everything we’ve learned into the relationship and become better versions of ourselves together.

I wish I could know what the future holds. I wish I knew whether this is goodbye or just not right now. But I don’t. And that’s what makes the idea of “right person, wrong time” so difficult. It gives you a question without giving you an answer. Maybe one day we will both grow into different versions of ourselves. Maybe we’ll become the people we needed to be when we were together. Maybe life will take us in completely different directions and, somehow, bring us back to the same place. Or maybe it won’t; that’s the scary part. You can’t build your life around a “maybe.”

I know I have to keep growing, experiencing new things, and becoming my own person. But moving forward doesn’t mean I have to convince myself that I wouldn’t want him back.

There is a difference between waiting for someone and leaving the door open. Waiting means putting your life on pause, hoping that someday they will return. Leaving the door open means continuing to live your life while accepting that some relationships are too meaningful to completely erase. That’s what I’m trying to do.

I’m trying to become my own person while accepting that if life ever gave us another chance, I’d want to see where it could take us. Maybe someday I’ll look back and realize that he was only meant to be part of one chapter of my life. Or maybe I’ll realize that we were given time apart because we needed it. I don’t know which one will happen. But maybe I don’t need to know yet.

Some people leave an imprint on you that doesn’t disappear just because the relationship ends. And maybe you can carry that with you without letting it keep you stuck. So I’ll keep moving forward. I’ll make new memories, grow into who I’m meant to be, and let life unfold the way it is supposed to. And if our paths ever lead us back to each other, I hope that when that moment comes, we’re both ready.

West Chester '27

Hi guys! My name is Elizabeth Keegan! I mostly go by Liz, and I am a junior majoring in secondary education with a focus on English here at West Chester. Some background that helps me be a part of Her Campus is that in high school, I helped with the online paper and also wrote my school’s new channels announcements in middle school!

A few things about me are that I am from Ambler, PA, and went to high school at Hatboro-Horsham. I have six siblings, and one of them is my twin brother. And we are the youngest! I have two dogs named Nando and Hazel, and they are my favorite pals!

Some of my personal interests include painting, reading every book I can, going out with friends, and collecting jewelry. My top priority is making time for my sister, as she is my absolute best friend, and we do almost everything together. I am part of Her Campus because I have a strong passion for writing. It helps me express how I feel and lets me decompress after long days. I write a lot in my free time, but I'm especially excited to start writing for this column! I hope whoever reads this enjoys my hot takes!
