Autumn is a transitional phase for the natural world as much as it is for many of us, especially freshmen experiencing our first college semester. The leaves are slowly brightening into magnificent reds and oranges, following their intentional journey of change until they inevitably fall and decompose, returning to the ground from whence they came. The leaves change rapidly, much like us as we experience these pivotal years full of joy and sorrow that mark our development as young people. Being a first year myself, I’m still settling into place here at Skidmore. Though I’ve only been residing here a month, I feel more in touch with myself than I have for most of my life. The first fall in a new place carries great meaning for me and is a key memory I carry with me years later. Taking your time and standing still to look at the beautiful foliage that accompanies the complicated feelings of autumn can help to calm eager nerves and quiet a racing mind. In honor of the beauty surrounding us, I’ve created a list of some places you can go to absorb the quiet coolness nature provides as you change and grow alongside it.
Congress Park
Saratoga Springs is a beautiful town with so much to offer despite its unremarkable size. Congress Park, to me, is the heart of this town and stands as a landmark and a place of beautiful contemplation. The serene water and structures that make up the park are reminiscent of a scene straight out of a Jane Austen novel, and the ducks calling this park their home only add to the charm. The park is sprawling and full of life, perfect for picnics, midday strolls or any activity that suits your mood. The leaves are painted the colors of fall and a view of them can help soothe your exhaustion.
Northwoods
Though I’ve been to the Northwoods only a handful of times, I can confidently say that its beauty and biodiversity make it a prime spot for enjoying the wonders of autumn. I love it especially because of its opportunities for birdwatching, an activity I particularly enjoy and encourage others to explore as well, and nature walks when the need for one arises. The woods are vast and different trails allow for different experiences based on your desires. Another positive is that it is located right on campus so it’s easily accessible for whenever you need a break from your academic life!
Saratoga Spa State Park
One last suggestion, though this one is the farthest from school, is the Saratoga Spa State Park itself. It is always a wonderful time visiting a state park and this one is only a bike or bus ride away. This outdoor space is home to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Roosevelt Baths & Spa, and a myriad of trails and springs that can provide you with a natural experience unlike any other in Saratoga Springs. The foliage is amazing and spending a day here could help ground the mind and replenish the soul.
Grab a coffee or fall drink to accompany you on your journey of self-discovery through the sights of autumn in this small town. Broadway Coffee Co. has lots of cutely themed fall drinks, Uncommon Grounds has a very delicious Pumpkin Doodle Latte, and if you want to go with something more familiar, you can just pop into the Starbucks close by. Fall is a time of change and no matter how you’re going about it, remember to stay warm and keep an open mind!
