Released on March 4, 2022, The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves, was an instant hit, grossing almost $800 million internationally against a $200 million budget. Starring Robert Pattinson, it was the first live-action solo Batman movie since Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy. After its success, a sequel was announced in 2023, titled The Batman: Part II. This movie wouldāve been released by now had it followed its original schedule, but the production of the sequel has been anything but consistent.Ā
Originally set to hit theaters on Oct. 3, 2025, the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strike delayed production for so long that the release date was pushed back two years, to 2027. Filming officially began in June 2026 in London and Glasgow. Subsequently, in July, the release date was pushed back again to Feb. 18, 2028, to allow more time for post-production.
As of October, filming has abruptly paused due to director Matt Reeves stepping away to focus on undisclosed family matters, marking the third production delay. The current release date is unknown, but fans hypothesize the film will be pushed back to late 2028 or even early 2029, almost four years past its original expected release date.Ā
Anticipatory fans of the sequel have begun sharing their incredulous gripes about the movie’s delay through humor on social media. Some note the stark age gap Pattinson will show in his performances: he will be 42 in the sequel despite it being set a mere three weeks after the events of the previous movie, where he was 36. In reaction to this pushback, James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has asked fans to be more patient with Reeves as the delays continue: āLet him do what heās doing. God, people are mean. Let him do his thing, man,ā Gunn says.
Reeves planned Pattinson’s Batman story as a trilogy, but it’s not just fans who are mocking the protracted time this will take. Pattinson has never been one to sugarcoat his opinions in the press, and he’s expressed how unexpectedly long this creative project has taken, even stating he may be retired when it’s officially finished. Despite this, Pattinson has not shared the same contempt for the process as fans have.
In the pause between movies, Pattinson has starred in truly outstanding films, with some calling it the peak of his acting career. His successes include Mickey 17 (2025), The Odyssey (2026), Primetime (2026), and Dune: Part Three, coming in December.Ā Alongside Pattinson, the cast features many distinguished new faces who have also found success in the interim. Following the closure of his contract with Marvel, Sebastian Stan joined the sequel’s cast, widely rumored to be playing Harvey Dent, also known as the DC rogue Two-Face. According to Stan, he landed the role because of Reeves’ esteem for his performance in The Apprentice (2024).
Only time will tell when The Batman: Part II will be officially released, though it may take longer than expected. Matt Reeves has already proved he can create impressive superhero material in The Batman, and there’s no doubt the same expectations will be met in his sequel. Despite the holdup on this movie, it’s not unusual for Reeves, who started creating the first movie in 2017, a lengthy five years before its release in 2022. So, perhaps sometimes the best things take time, at least in Reeves’ case.
