Writing is something that I am constantly doing. Whether it be coming up with a slam poem for my creative writing class or completing a strategic plan for my public relations course, I am almost always writing something. Recently, I have started journaling and taking time to write for MYSELF, which is a whole new concept for me. I have never been great at talking about my thoughts and feelings, but writing it down does come a bit easier since it is second nature to me. It also brings comfort that I don’t have to try and form the perfect sentence or way to say it, but I can just write freely. Doing things for me and focusing one strictly on myself is a whole different ball game, which is why I have put a different spin to my journaling.

I am not only writing the journals for me. I am writing them to my future children and my future grandchildren, if I have the chance to have them one day. Having someone to write for, even if they do not exist, has given me motivation to keep up with the journals.

I want the journals to be something they can read one day to see what is happening in my life or in the world. I want them to be something they can resonate with if they are going through the same emotions, thoughts and feelings. I want them to be something they look forward to reading one day to learn more about me and know they always have me in their corner.

I haven’t changed anything from regular journaling. I keep up with my thoughts and feelings. Sharing things that are happening in my life and what life is like during this time. But I always write as if they are intended for them and not myself.

The part I like most is that I put them in envelopes. I don’t seal them, but I put them in a box that I will keep for them. That way if I want to go back and read them, I don’t have to break the seal and they will always be open for me to go back to.

Doing this has motivated me to keep up with my journaling and brought such happiness knowing that one day someone else will get to read my journals. I look forward to sharing them one day and cannot wait to see how many I will have made by the time someone gets to read them. I highly recommend trying this way of journaling if you have a hard time trying to keep up with it and need a way to get down your thoughts and feelings. You could even try just making letters for the future too, because one day you will want to look back on those memories and see how far you have come.
