Malcolm Todd is not only known for being a heartthrob, but also for his heartbreaking, amusing music. Following the release of his third album, Do That Again, earlier this year, Todd went on a world tour of the same name and struck a chord with everyone in New York City. Honestly, I really loved Todd’s self-titled album, and I was fortunate enough to attend that tour at Terminal 5 (ew) for his NYC stop. However, due to his popularity skyrocketing this past year, Todd was able to book a bigger venue: Radio City Music Hall. Thankfully, this year I had the chance to see him again for this tour, and I will say, he definitely had everyone heartstruck during his set.
Before I attended, I met up with my two friends, Lyric and Harmony, and we all took the train to head to Radio City Music Hall. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to see the opener, 54 Ultra, but from people’s excitement after his set, it seems as though he was a good opener to start. The three of us waited in line for merch before we went to our seats; I ended up purchasing a T-shirt and a poster. As soon as I sat down in my seat, I noticed there was a crowd of people, most of whom were cheering. I kept wondering who was here that everyone kept going over to and cheering about. That was until someone who was sitting in front of me came to her seat and said that it was Audrey Hobert. For those unaware, Hobert is Todd’s younger sister and is also known for her popular song, “Sue Me.” I was so surprised to see that Hobert came to the concert, and at the same time, it was sweet for her to show up for her brother. Sadly, since there were so many people surrounding her, I didn’t have the chance to get a picture with her, but being in the same venue as her was insane enough. Then, just as it hit 9 p.m., the lights went out and the crowd went insane.
While Todd didn’t have much of a set production due to his genre being mainly indie pop and alternative R&B, he did much more with production than he did for his first tour. Not only because the venue was larger, but also because he had lots of fun when it came to the screen projections at Radio City. For those who are unaware, Radio City has two big screens on the sides for those who don’t have a clear view of the stage in the middle. So, he had a lot of fun using them; he started the night by pretending to do a boxing walkout with a funny announcer voice announcing his band and himself. Then, he went in and opened his tour with the opening song from his album, “Jean Skirt.” Then, he launched into his popular song “Breathe,” and everyone in the venue started screaming the lyrics back at him. Not only that, but I looked around and saw so many people either dancing with their friends, their significant other, or just jamming out to the song. Throughout the night, the crowd was screaming their heads off in the best way; I even sang a few songs with some girls in front of me. However, I have to say, my favorite moment of the night was the encore song, “Roommates.” There’s a part of the song that just has you jumping up and down. Before the beat drop, Todd yelled to the crowd asking them to shake the venue with their jumping — and boy, they did not disappoint. I was able to get a video of everyone in the venue jumping up and down and right as that happened, confetti started pouring from the ceiling. It was such a fun and heartwarming way to end an incredible show.
It was such an amazing moment for Todd because when I first saw him, he was in a small venue with a tight crowd. Now, he’s gotten so popular that he can perform in larger venues. I’m excited to see where he might go if he decides to drop another album next year. Maybe he’ll end up at Barclays Center or even Madison Square Garden; we’ll see. Overall, that night was an amazing experience and a big moment for Todd.
