7 Pieces You Need to Successfully Transition Your Wardrobe from Winter to Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIT chapter.

As the weather outside changes, so must our wardrobes. It can be so difficult getting dressed in the morning when it’s 60 degrees and sunny one day and 35 degrees and raining the next. As much as you’re dying to break out all of your breezy mini dresses and sandals, Mother Nature isn’t quite there yet. This transition period can totally put a damper on some good outfits — but why should it?

As long as you are equipped with the right pieces, getting dressed for this weird in-between weather should be a breeze. You can still exude that sunshine state of mind even when spring doesn’t quite feel like it. Below, I’ve compiled a list of your transition season essentials so you can take on the day with ease — and a kick ass outfit.

1. Medium weight jackets

While it’s beginning to be too warm for your heavy puffer coat, it is also not quite warm enough to go sans coat. A great medium weight jacket is going to be your BFF in the coming weeks. Whether a sherpa lined moto jacket (Mango, $90) , a chic bomber (Free People, $198), or a cozy teddy coat (Nordstrom Rack, $30), find one that fits your personal style. Opt for a bright color if you’re looking to channel some spring vibes. You can always layer up with scarves and hats for those chilly nights.

2. Booties

I am a die hard bootie wearer. I own way too many to count and wear mine year round. These ankle height heeled boots are the perfect transition piece because they provide enough coverage that your feet won’t get cold, but can also be paired with dresses or skirts for particularly warm days. Trust me, a good pair of booties is the most versatile shoe out there. I’m partial to leopard print booties (Cole Haan, $42), but you can’t go wrong with a classic black (DSW, $55).

3. Light sweaters

Light sweaters are perfect for this time of year because they can be styled in so many different ways. Pair with jeans and booties or throw one on over a dress. Light sweaters (Zara, $50) provide just enough warmth without being bulky or heavy.

4. Tights

Tights are so essential this time of year when you want to wear dresses, but your legs don’t necessarily want to be exposed to the cold all day. Opt for an on-trend patterned pair (Calzedonia, $6) for a more fashion-y twist on your childhood staple.

5. Duster tops

Duster tops are so trendy right now and practically scream spring. I love how they can be paired with jeans and a heeled bootie or with denim cutoffs and sneakers. This is going to be the look all of your friends are going to want to copy. I especially love this one from Windsor (Windsor, $33).

6. Midi Dresses & Skirts

Spring is truly the season of the midi. The chic style begs to be shown off. Midis are particularly great in transition from winter to spring because the longer length provides just a little bit more warmth than your traditional mini. Go for breezy florals (Lulu’s, $59) for a feminine look or keep it simple in solids (ASOS, $44).

7. Hair scarf

There’s something about a hair scarf that just exudes sunshine and warmth. Tie one around your locks to get a touch of that fun, spring style we’re all after, even on the most basic of outfits. I have my eye on this one from Urban Outfitters (Urban Outfitters, $10).

You don’t have to wait until the weather warms up to start rocking your favorite spring styles. Armed with your trusty fashion essentials, transitional style is easier than ever.
