Minecraft, a sandbox video game by Mojang Studios released in 2011, is one of the most widely known video games in the world. From McDonald’s meals to merchandise to even a movie, Minecraft allows players to build anything they can dream of. Minecraft Live, a live-stream event focused on announcing updates and additions to the game, took place Sept. 26 with some big announcements, including the new Ice Caves, a dimension called The Sift, and Minecraft World, which includes a Minecraft hotel, all set to be released by 2027.

The Sift

Players of Minecraft are familiar with the classic dimensions such as The Overworld, where a player spawns into the game; The Nether, a lava-infested “underworld” filled with mobs; and The End, the final dimension that players travel to in hopes of beating the Ender Dragon, the game’s “final boss.” The last dimension was The End, arriving for players in 2011. The announcement of The Sift has sparked excitement among crafters who have waited 15 years to explore a new dimension.

The Sift was the final update announced during Minecraft Live, an update no viewer was anticipating. Originally announced as part of Minecraft Dungeons II, an RPG dungeon crawler spin-off of Minecraft, The Sift features new mobs, blocks, and resources for players to collect and interact with.

The Sift is a turquoise and pink biome that can be entered by activating the portal in the Deep Dark by placing note blocks, an in-game musical item, on the Note Block Machine. The Sift acts as the opposite of the Deep Dark, similar to the Overworld and the Nether. While players on Bedrock and Java will have to wait until 2027 to explore the dimension, Minecraft Dungeons II players can already enter The Sift. The Sift also comes with new mobs, including the super-cute unnamed mob, which resembles a combination of a frog and a rabbit.

Ice Caves

Cave biomes in Minecraft have seen steady development over the years, with updates in 2020 and 2021 adding axolotls, Lush Caves, Dripstone Caves, copper ore, and more. 2022 brought the Deep Dark, a biome that generates deep underground and houses The Warden, a sound-activated boss mob.

The latest addition to Cave biomes includes Ice Caves, coming to the game in Winter 2026. Game director Agnes Larsson shared the update during Minecraft Live, giving players a sneak peek at the biome’s new items and mobs.

Ice caves feature icicles, light-emitting ice crystals, and a new zombie mob, the Frozen Zombie. Certain Frozen Zombies spawn in the game holding snowballs, which can be used as a long-range weapon against players. One interesting component of the Ice Caves is that, along with ice blocks and pools of chilly water, lava pools flow through them, surprisingly not melting the ice.

Minecraft world

One of the larger, non-game-related announcements is Minecraft World, located at Chessington World of Adventures in Chessington, Greater London, England. Minecraft World will host the first-ever Minecraft-themed roller coaster, “Escape the Nether,” transporting guests through the frightening dimension in a minecart.

Details of Minecraft World were also announced during the March Minecraft Live broadcast, but the September broadcast revealed further details. The immersive area will host the largest shop for Minecraft merchandise, mob interactions, themed food, and a hotel room designed to make you feel like you’re inside the game.

A restaurant opening at the hotel is set to be designed similarly to the coral reef biome in Minecraft, decorated with tropical fish, bright coral, and ambient blue lighting to transport you under the sea. Guests will also be able to set their respawn point in the themed hotel rooms, with beds designed to match the iconic red-and-white Minecraft bed, glowstone lamps, chests, and wall decorations.

Of course, these aren’t the only announcements for Minecraft. Other updates are expected to come, offering new mobs, items, and opportunities for players. The possibilities are endless; it’s up to your imagination to see just how far you can build.
